Directive 2008/98/EC released by the European Union represents a significant step forward in all relevant aspects of waste management. Under the already established, extended produced responsibility (EPR) principle, new policies have been enunciated to continuously achieve better overall environmental performance of key products throughout their life phases. This paper discusses how the directive is being articulated in Spain by the main integrated management system (IMS) for end-of-life (EOL) tyres since its creation in 2006. Focusing on the IMS technological, economic and legal aspects, the study provides a global perspective and evaluation of how the IMS is facing the current issues to resolve, the new challenges that have appeared and the management vision for the coming years.
Purpose-The clean development mechanism (CDM) project is a cost-effective instrument to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and to transfer technology and capital from industrialized to developing countries. HRM practices are important sustainable development co-benefits of CDM projects and Brazil is the third largest CDM project developer in the world. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the HRM practices declared by Brazilian CDM projects and how these practices have been, in fact, implemented by the proponents of these projects. Design/methodology/approach-A mixed methodology was developed, based especially on qualitative and quantitative methods, in the Brazilian context. Findings-The authors found that CDM activities are improving recruitment, human resource participation and training practices in Brazilian companies, influencing the integration of environmental management into HRM practicesgreen HRM. In addition, the study presents hints of interesting avenues to explore in further studies. For example, why is it that some organizations are able to change the routines associated with organizational learning and/or culture while others are not. Originality/value-The overall results suggested that there is further potential within GHG emissions reduction projects to improve green HRM.
This study analyzes the effect of organizational characteristics on the innovation project performance. This research applies fuzzy set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA) to a large sample of Spanish firms appearing in the Community Innovation survey (CIS). The results show that the combination of organizational innovation, firm size and cooperation with national and, especially, international firms is a sufficient condition for the success of innovation projects within the organization. Evidence also suggests that variables such as the investment on R&D per employee or the seniority of the company do not affect the success of innovation projects. These findings help complement some results in previous studies on innovation projects performance.
This paper presents a teaching approach for an undergraduate course of project management under the learning by doing paradigm. The course experience as a whole is presented, including planning aspects for all scheduled activities, are provided later. The definition of the project is provided, as well as its specific details for practical project work, the main educative instrument of the course, in order to bring out the most relevant aspects of the approach. These include improving the learning process by means of a collaborative model and details of the assessment process that make continuous improvement possible. Detailed research to evaluate the effect of students' previous work experience of this learning model is also considered in this paper.
