Abstract. Marital violence is a very important topic in diff erent contexts, given its high prevalence worldwide. The aim of the present quantitative study was to describe violent marital relationships and analyze correlations with sociodemographic variables. 186 couples (N=372) participated in this study. All couples reside in the metropolitan area of Porto Alegre (RS), are offi cially married or live together. Snowball sampling was used to select the subjects. A sociodemographic questionnaire was used to collect data, as well as the Revised Confl ict Tactics Scale (CTS-2), to identify the diff erent expressions of violence within the marital relationship. For data analysis all information was entered in the SPSS program (20.0) and descriptive statistics was performed in order to check variables. Among the most important results, male
Domestic violence has been considered accountable for a reduction inthe level of marital quality, although no relationship has been identified between these variables. This study aimed to measure the levels of marital quality and domestic violence, as well as their relationship with sociodemographic characteristics and the predictive power of the different types of violence on martial quality. This quantitative study included 186 heterosexual couples (N = 372), who answered a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Golombok Rust Inventory of Marital State (GRIMS), and the Revised Conflict Tactics Scales (CTS2). The respondents assessed their marital quality as being average or very good (66.5%), and poor or with very severe problems (33.5%). Although good levels of marital quality prevailed, the rates of psychological violence reached 86.6%. A negative correlation was found between violence and marital quality. A possible naturalization of violence was found, especially psychological, which was the dimension with the highest predictive power for marital problems.
Domestic Violence and Transgenerationality: A Case Study AbstractThe consequences of domestic violence tend to reach everyone involved, affecting significant areas of life, such as professional career, family and social bonds. The objective of this research was to comprehend a woman's experience of marital domestic violence and its repercussions on her life. The authors performed a case study on a woman who had been living at a support center due to her experience with domestic violence, using a sociodemographic questionnaire and a semi structured interview. The participant's life story and marital relationship were analyzed, investigating transgenerational aspects, understanding how she evaluated her own relationship and the repercussions of violence perceived in her life. According to the methodology of case studies, all collected data received quantitative and qualitative analysis. The results showed that models learned along interactions within the original families were relevant, according to the patient, to maintain a violent marital relationship, which reinforces the transgenerational perspective of violence. Furthermore, the results indicate the necessity of an attentive approach from health professionals, concerning experiences of violence during childhood, in order to develop interventions that propitiate the rupturing from transgenerational cycles.
Background Evidence regarding the feelings evoked, distress caused, and the best way to conduct protective stabilization for the management of young children is lacking. Aim Describe the perceptions of mothers, psychologists, and pediatric dentists regarding the use of protective stabilization during the dental care of children up to three years of age attending a University Dental Clinic in southern Brazil. Design After watching a video of dental care involving the protective stabilization technique, individualized qualitative interviews were held with three groups [mothers (n = 5), psychologists (n = 7), and pediatric dentists (n = 4)] to investigate four categories of interest: importance of the technique, affective attitude, distress caused to the child, and participation of parents. After the transcription of the recorded comments, qualitative content analysis was performed. Results Protective stabilization generated emotional discomfort but was well accepted by all groups. All expressed the need to create a bond between the dentist and caregiver; and the active participation of the caregiver was considered fundamental. The mothers and psychologists rejected other options, such as passive restraint, general anesthesia, and sedation. Conclusion The three groups admitted having negative feelings, recognized the importance of protective stabilization, and suggested conditions for its use.
