Worldwide, recent corporate collapses have added to the insecurity of financial markets, triggering regulatory responses. This study provides empirical evidence of the relationship between corporate governance and the efficiency of Australian banks between 1999 and 2013, using two-stage double-bootstrap data envelopment analysis. Of the five corporate governance factors considered, we find board size and committee meetings have robustly significant and positive effects on efficiency. We also find evidence of improvements in overall industry efficiency following the 2003 introduction of the Principles of Good Corporate Governance, but not of any statistically-significant influence of the GFC.
In this study, we analyze the impact of threshold value of energy saving level set by the policy maker on energy saving level and price set by green supply chains. Then, the decision of the policy maker and the coordination of a supply chain are investigated. The results suggest that both regulation and supply chain structure have significant impacts on energy savings and profits. From the observations, we can conclude vertical integration and coordination should be advocated if energy savings is urgent and regulation is implemented.
Radical innovation is a fundamental approach to achieving sustainable and competitive advantage. However, existing studies have not adequately explored the antecedents of radical innovation; in particular, consideration of leadership factors in a Chinese context is lacking. Ambidextrous leadership provides a new perspective for explaining radical innovation. In this study, we developed a moderation model and tested it with three-wave data of 511 employees from the Chinese mainland, linking ambidextrous leadership with radical innovative capability. The results support our hypotheses that high-empowering-low-directive leadership (punctuated ambidextrous leadership) is more beneficial for radical innovation, and strong leader support can strengthen this effect. However, our hypothesis that simultaneous ambidextrous leadership influences positively radical innovation capability was not supported. These findings indicate that leaders should change their original conservative and directive strategies to enhance radical innovative capability.
This study proposes a by-production Luenberger-Hicks-Moorsteen indicator that includes undesirable outputs, here CO2 emissions, in airline performance analysis. We use capital and staff as inputs and tonnekilometres available as a desirable output to evaluate operation stage efficiency and productivity of the world's major airlines between 2007 and 2013. Our results demonstrate European airlines are relatively stronger performers in terms of both pollution-adjusted operational efficiency and productivity. Middle-Eastern airlines have made gains in terms of output growth but perform poorly in terms of pollution-adjusted productivity, evidence that ETSs may produce greener airlines.
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to explore how and when ethical leadership enhances bootlegging. To achieve this purpose, the authors proposed a moderated dual-path model in this study.
Design/methodology/approach
The model was tested on two related studies. Study 1 was based on three-wave, collected data from a sample of 511 employees of Chinese companies. Data used in Study 2 was collected by survey from employees and their direct leaders of multiple departments of companies in China.
Findings
In Study 1, the authors found that moral efficacy and moral identity mediate between ethical leadership and bootlegging. Findings from Study 2 provide convergent support of moral efficacy’s and moral identity’s impact on the mediation relationship between ethical leadership and bootlegging. Moreover, the results of Study 2 further reveal that the relationship between ethical leadership and moral efficacy (or moral identity) was more significant among leader–follower with different genders.
Originality/value
This study not only enriches the literature on ethical leadership and gender (dis)similarity, but also helps managers to better understand the function of bootlegging.
