This study was undertaken on canine pyometra and consisted of 28 bitches of different breeds with known breeding history and open type of pyometra. The diagnosis of pyometra was made by correlating the history and clinical signs with the findings of abdominal palpation, radiography and ultrasonography. The physiological, haematological and biochemical parameters were evaluated before and at the end of therapy. The clinical cases were divided randomly into four different groups with each group consisting of seven bitches. One untreated control group in which bitches were given only supportive therapies was included. The bitches in the other three groups were treated using natural PGF 2 α or synthetic PGF 2 α or a combination of a dopamine agonist prolactininhibiting drug, i.e., cabergoline and lower dose of synthetic PGF 2 α (Cloprostenol) along with supportive therapies. Treatment of canine pyometra by the use of different drugs was found to be successful. Though a lower dose of cloprostenol was effective in treating pyometra, it is not recommended due to high rates of recurrence and lower conception rates. Treatment of canine pyometra using a combination of a dopamine agonist prolactin-inhibiting drug (Cabergoline) and a lower dose of synthetic PGF 2 α (Cloprostenol) was found to be the most effective method among the three therapeutic protocols used in the present study.
Aim:The aim of the study was to find out alteration in physiological and haematological parameters in bitches affected with pyometra. Materials and methods:Physiological and haematological parameters were studied in twenty eight bitches affected with pyometra.Results: Evaluation of physiological parameters revealed that rectal temperature and respiration rate were increased in the bitches affected with pyometra where as heart rate did not reveal any significant change. In haematological parameters, haemoglobin, packed cell volume (PCV), total erythrocyte count (TEC) and lymphocyte count were decreased in the bitches affected with pyometra. The total leucocyte count (TLC), neutrophil count and monocyte count were increased in pyometra. Erythrocytic indices like mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH) and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC) did not show any significant changes in the bitches. Conclusion:Normocytic and normochromic anaemia, leucocytosis, a predominant absolute neutrophilia, lymphopenia and monocytosis were the most common findings in all the bitches affected with pyometra.
Aim: The current study was done to study the therapeutic effect of natural prostaglandin in treatment of canine pyometra. Materials and Methods: Seven bitches were treated with natural PGF2 á i.e. dinoprost tromethamine at the dose rate of 100 μg/kg body weight subcutaneously once daily for 7 days with supportive therapies. The physiological, haematological and biochemical parameters were studied before (0th day) and after treatment (8th day). Therapeutic efficacy was assessed in terms of return of abnormal parameters to either normal or near normal value as compared to the untreated control group, intensity of side effects and post treatment reproductive status. Results: All physiological, haematological and biochemical parameters in the seven treated bitches returned to normal range at the end of treatment. The intensity of side effects was quite severe in the treatment group. Six bitches came to estrus within 2 months of treatment and out of them four conceived on subsequent mating. In rest three bitches there was recurrence of pyometra within 4 months of treatment. Conclusion: Though conception rate of recovered bitches is decreased when compared with that of normal healthy bitches still this treatment protocol can be used successfully in treatment of canine pyometra to conserve the breeding capability of bitches.
