Pyogenic liver abscesses are not infrequent in some developing countries. Amoebic abscesses may also occur in endemic areas and differentiation may be difficult. The ultrasonic data of proven cases of both conditions were compared and we are now more more confident in predicting the aetiology of these lesions.
Juvenile papillomas are benign, squamous-cell neoplasms that involve the laryngo-trachea. They are relatively common lesions that are generally considered to be of viral origin (Mounts & Kashima, 1984). Distal extension down the trachea or into proximal bronchi is uncommon and extension into the lung parenchyma occurs in only approximately 1% of cases (Kramer et al, 1985) and usually follows surgical intervention. In the lung, nodules are formed in the dependent areas and these frequently cavitate. The nature of these thickwalled, air-containing masses is best appreciated by computed tomography (CT) and is illustrated by the following case.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
