AbstracL Four cases of lactobezoar, an unusual cause of vomiting in the neonatal period, are described and illustrated. From our experience with the first case we were able to diagnose the next three cases from the plain radiographs. The condition is likely to resolve spontaneously on intravenous feeding.
We report on two neonates who had esophageal atresia with a distal tracheo-esophageal fistula (type III) and a second fistula between the distal esophagus and an intralobular sequestrated lung segment. In both patients the bronchopulmonary foregut malformation became evident only when the entire esophagus was in continuity following primary repair and a contrast swallow was performed to evaluate the anastomotic site.
Pyogenic liver abscesses are not infrequent in some developing countries. Amoebic abscesses may also occur in endemic areas and differentiation may be difficult. The ultrasonic data of proven cases of both conditions were compared and we are now more more confident in predicting the aetiology of these lesions.
Skeletal survey in an 8-year-old girl with primary hyperoxaluria and in chronic renal failure revealed wide translucent metaphyseal bands and defects at the ends of the long bones. Similar disordered bone growth was seen as rims of rarefaction around the large epiphyses, the patella and the tarsal bones. Bone density was generally increased. The translucent metaphyseal bands were separated from the diaphyses by an irregular line of increased bone density. Biopsy of a bone defect showed massive deposition of oxalate crystals indicative of advanced oxalosis of bone.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
