Ultrasonic features of pyogenic and amoebic hepatic abscesses

Abstract: Pyogenic liver abscesses are not infrequent in some developing countries. Amoebic abscesses may also occur in endemic areas and differentiation may be difficult. The ultrasonic data of proven cases of both conditions were compared and we are now more more confident in predicting the aetiology of these lesions.

“…28 PLAs are, however, reported to have more irregular, indistinct edges than ALA and are more likely to have a "honeycomb" appearance, whereas ALAs tend toward more well-defined round or oval lesions 29 and are more likely to have peripheral halos. 25,26,30,31 When liquefaction ensues, the cavities of both ALA and PLA reflect variable content including homogeneous echogenic or anechoic fluid (►Fig. 6), heterogeneous fluid with internal debris, and even air-fluid levels.…”

“…Multiple ALAs are likely to be contiguous, whereas multiple PLA are likely to be widely dispersed. 30 With regard to healing, PLAs shrink without much change in echogenicity after treatment, whereas ALAs may become more well-defined. 30…”
