This research aims to develop a module based on plant biodiversity and conservation in the Kudus area for high school students. The R&D research design, according to Borg & Gall, was implemented. The module was developed in five stages: research and information-gathering, planning; initial product development; preliminary field test; and product revision. Assessment and review of the module were performed by seven expert validators. Validity and reliability of the assessment instrument for the module were conducted and participated by 68 students. Thirty-one students became participants in the field test. Data were collected using a validation sheet and questionnaire. Data Analysis utilized excel, SPSS, and Rasch. Based on the assessment of validator experts, the module was declared valid. The module validation test gained an average score of 3.68 (very good). Students' responses showed that the Person measure was +3.22 logit, indicating that the students tended to agree with the proposed questions. The person and item reliability were 0.84 and 0.77, respectively. These values mean that the person reliability showed high consistency. The result of Rasch Analysis clarified the acceptance of students regarding the module both from Kudus and Non Kudus area. The results also showed students' interest and understanding of the issue of conservation and biodiversity, as well as their awareness of the local wisdom. It is recommended to develop a similar module as an effort of local potencies conservation.

Learning biodiversity using INSTAD learning strategy to improve metacognition awareness and student’s cognitive achievement : a study toward student of SMA Batik 1 Surakarta. This research is considered as a quantitative research, and analyzed as according to quasi-experimental paradigm. The research was designed using pretest-posttest randomized subject control-group. Experimental group was determined and upon which INSTAD strategy was applied. Instead of the non experiment one. Such the aforementioned strategy was conducted upon student of SMA Batik 1 Surakarta as a population. Sampling was taken randomly upon two chosen the X-5 (experiment class) and the X-4 (control class). Data was collected using questionnaire, test and observation form. The data were analyzed by anacova. Results of the study showed that metacognition was significantly affected by INSTAD. However the application of INSTAD has taken effect on student’s cognitive achievement in studying biology of SMA Batik 1 Surakarta.

Key Words: INSTAD learning strategies, metacognition, student’s cognitive achievement

Surakarta is a city with polluted air due to transportation activities. Utilization of bioindicators could be one of efforts to monitor air pollution. Lichen is one of the air quality bioindicators that can be observed based on its morphological characteristics. This study aimed to determine air quality using lichen bioindicators at two stations in the Jebres sub-district, namely on UNS street and Juanda street. These two locations have different environmental characteristics and traffic density. This study is a descriptive exploratory research using purposive sampling method. The collected data were analyzed qualitatively based on the morphological characteristics of the lichen found. The results showed that nine species of lichen found in UNS street area, while five species of lichen in Juanda street area. Apparently, morphological character of lichen consisted of crustose, leprose, and foliose thallus types with bright thallus colour, larger diameter, and more individuals, whereas in Juanda street is crustose and leprosy with a duller color, smaller diameter, and fewer individuals. In fact, the vehicle density in the area of Juanda street was higher than UNS street area. As it is largerly known that the type and morphology are influenced by the environmental quality. Therefore, based on the founded lichen’s type and morphology, the area of Juanda street was likely more polluted than UNS street area. Our finding suported that lichen could be bioindicator for air quality.
