BACKGROUND: School performance encompasses several forms of representation, and this has been identified as stressing factors with negative repercussions on teachers’ health. In 2020 this scenario was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, with yet unknown consequences on teachers’ health. Our hypothesis is that the disease affected both the quality of life and work ability of teachers. OBJECTIVE: To identify the association between burnout syndrome, work ability, quality of life and physical activity in basic education teachers during the COVID-19 pandemic in the city of Campo Grande, Brazil. METHODS: Data collection took place from April 2020 to April 2021 through an online form linked to Google Forms. Quality of life was measured using the WHOQOL-bref, Work Ability through Work Ability Index (WAI) and burnout syndrome aspects through MBI-HSS. The association between variables was assessed by Pearson’s correlation test with p < 0,05. RESULTS: Teachers self-rated their quality of life positively (good/very good = 55.9%), showed good (43,1%) or very good (27,7%) work ability, and had low emotional fatigue (41.6%), low depersonalization (75.7%) and high personal fulfillment (58.4%). The highest correlations indicate that the greater the emotional fatigue, the lower the WAI (r = – 0.60); and the higher the WAI, the higher the quality of life (all p < 0,05). CONCLUSION: The associations indicate that those teachers who showed greater emotional fatigue showed less ability to work. In addition, a negative association between emotional fatigue and physical, social and environmental domain of quality of life was also expressed, which may be relevant to the work environment.
Abstract: Faced with the COVID-19 pandemic, teaching work began to be carried out through remote teaching, interfering with the life habits of these professionals. This research was carried out with the objective of identifying the factors associated with the level of physical activity and sedentary behavior of teachers in times of the COVID-19 pandemic. This is a cross-sectional observational research, with elementary school teachers from Campo Grande/MS, Brazil. Data collection took place between 2020 and 2021, through an online form, with questions about sociodemographic characteristics and lifestyle habits (physical activity, sitting time and screen time) and the analyzes were conducted using the Chi-Square test and logistic regression. . The results showed a high prevalence of teachers who were insufficiently active (41.5%) and with excessive sedentary behavior, especially regarding screen time during remote work (90.5%) and free time (41.5%). Being married or having a stable union impacted the level of physical activity (OR=0.241); the lower age group and the effective contract induced a lower chance of meeting the acceptable values for sitting time and screen time (OR=0.249; OR=0.183); gender (women) and type of contract (effective) resulted in a higher risk of developing remote work on weekends (OR=2.229; OR=2.700). The COVID-19 pandemic influenced the life habits of the teaching population, taking up more free time of these individuals to perform work tasks. Thus, there is a need for public policies that encourage an active and healthy lifestyle among teachers.
Physical activity can be used as a strategy in the recovery of addicts, especially in activities focused on education and leisure since it helps to control stress and anxiety. Thus, the objective of this study was to analyze the insertion and to verify the acceptance of the Physical Education professional in the recovery process of addicts living in the seven therapeutic communities in the city of Campo Grande (Capital of the State of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil). To achieve this objective, the coordinators and resident monitors answered a semi-structured questionnaire prepared by the researchers, consisting of 10 questions, 6 objectives in which the participants indicated the level of importance in relation to the inquiry and 4 subjective questions with the intention of investigating the modalities of physical activity most practiced in Therapeutic Communities (TCs) and other pertinent subjects. The results showed that the participants think it is very important to perform physical activity in the treatment of addicts and believe that the presence of the Physical Education professional to conduct such activities is also valid. In the CTs with this professional (n=1) the activities mentioned were weight training, soccer and stretching while in the others (n=6) running, stretching, walking, soccer, volleyball, workout gymnastics and group games were described. It was concluded that there is a very positive inclination toward the acceptance of the physical education professional in the recovery plan of addicts even in communities where there is no presence of this professional acting.
