Writing is considered to be the most demanding and difficult skill for many college students, since there are some steps to be followed such as prewriting, drafting, editing, revising and publishing. The interesting topic like culture including lifestyle, costume, and custom is necessary to be offered in Academic Writing class. Accordingly, this article aims to elaborate the application of a cultural project based learning to develop students' ability in academic writing. This descriptive qualitative research was conducted in Academic Writing class consisting of 20 students of the fourth semester. The students were divided into some groups, each consisting of 4-5 people assigned to make a cultural project within 6 weeks, in the form of essay. Each member of the groups has to create his/ her own essay and then compile the essays to be a mini-journal. Therefore, each group has one mini-journal consisting of 4-5 essays. To check the content of mini-journal, the lecturer also asked the groups to present in front of the class to get some suggestions, feedback, or comments.
Graphic organizers are used in ELT classroom to help the students learn better. It refers to the way the students use graphic organizers in writing. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of graphic organizers on ELT students’ writing quality. This study was a quasi-experimental research design. The experimental group was taught by using graphic organizers. The control group was administered by using conventional strategy. The participants of the research were the second semester students of English Department, in one of the private universities in Madiun. The data were analyzed by utilizing independent t-test and one-way ANOVA based on the level of significance at .05. The result of the study shows that there is a significant difference between the mean scores of the students in the experimental and control groups. The students who are taught by using graphic organizers are better than the students who are taught using conventional strategy. The students in the experimental group perform better on writing quality in terms of content, vocabulary, and mechanics than those who do in the control group. It can be concluded that graphic organizers have a significant effect on ELT students’ writing quality. It is effective to be used in order to help the students write better. The students are successful in generating the ideas of writing and it can create a social community. We recommend for the future researchers to realize other various graphic organizer models into research.
<p>Disleksia adalah salah satu jenis gangguan berbahsa yang dapat menjadi hambatan bagi perkembangan bahasa anak. Disleksia berdampak pada fungsi neurologi otak yang berfungsi untuk pemrosesan bahasa. disleksia juga berdampak pada kemampuan menulis anak. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mendeskripsikan dan menjelaskan bentuk-bentuk bahasa tulis pada anak dengan disleksia. Penelitian ini menggunakan jenis penelitian kualitatif deskriptif. Subjek dalam penelitian ini adalah MNJ, dia adalah siswa kelas dua sekolah dasar. Sumber data dari penelitian ini berasal dari dokumentasi bentuk bahasa tulis dan bahasa lisan dari subjek penelitian. Teknik pengambilan data penelitian ini melalui wawancara, dokumentasi dan pengamatan. Data penelitian ini dianalisis menggunakan reduksi data, sajian data, simpulan dan verifikasi data.hasil temuan dari penelitian ini adalah disleksia menyebabkan beberapa gangguan pada bentuk bahasa tulis anak. Gangguan tersebut antara lain adalah kesalahan menuliskan huruf dalam posisi terbalik, penghilangan huruf, penambahan huruf dan penggantian huruf yang tidak sesuai. Huruf yang ditulis terbalik oleh MNJ berbeda dengan anak disleksia yang lain. Huruf yang sering ditulis secara terbalik adalah b, d, k, e, a, r, h, s, p and t. Meskipun dia memiliki kekurangan dalam kemampuan menulis tetapi MNJ unggul dalam hal menyimak.</p>
The study aims to investigate how Indonesian authors write their English and Indonesian research article (RA) discussion sections. There were 7 Indonesian authors who write 1 English research article and 1 Indonesian research article published in national accredited journals. The study executed rhetorical moves designed by Swales (1990) to be used here as the instrument. In general, the findings show that 7 Indonesian authors operate not too different rhetorical patterns of English and Indonesian RA discussion sections viewed from moves occurrences, completeness, and order of the move structures. Nearly all 7 Indonesian authors show 5 moves in the English RA discussion section consisting of statement of the results-(un)expected outcome-reference to previous research-explanation-deduction and hypothesis. They use 6 moves in the Indonesian RA discussion section consisting of statement of the results-(un)expected outcome-reference to previous research-explanation-exemplification-deduction and hypothesis. However, each author has his/her specific move structure seen from the moves order and moves frequency. The specific uses of move structure are explained with examples in the forms of sentences or phrases. Thus, the authors are in the position of having their rhetorical patterns suited the context and communities.Keywords: Indonesian authors, research articles (RA), discussion sections, rhetorical patterns PILIHAN POLA RETORIKA PENULIS INDONESIA DALAM MENULIS BAGIAN PEMBAHASAN ARTIKEL PENELITIAN BERBAHASA INGGRIS DAN BERBAHASA INDONESIA Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meneliti bagaimana penulis Indonesia menulis bagian pembahasan artikel penelitian berbahasa Inggris dan berbahasa Indonesia. Data diperoleh dari 7 penulis Indonesia yang pernah menulis dan mempublikasi 1 artikel penelitian berbahasa Inggris dan 1 artikel penelitian berbahasa Indonesia di jurnal ilmiah terakreditasi nasional. Penelitian ini menggunakan pola retorika (moves) yang dikembangkan oleh Swales (1990) sebagai instrumen untuk menganalisis bagian pembahasan artikel penelitian. Secara umum, hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ketujuh penulis Indonesia memilih pola retorika yang tidak terlalu berbeda pada bagian pembahasan yang berbahasa Inggris dan berbahasa Indonesia, dilihat dari frekuensi kemunculan moves, kelengkapan moves, dan urutan movesnya. Sebagian besar penulis memilih 5 moves pada bagian pembahasan yang berbahasa Inggris, yaitu statement of the results-(un)expected outcome-reference to previous research-explanation-deduction and hypothesis. Bagian pembahasan yang berbahasa Indonesia memiliki 6 moves, yaitu statement of the results-(un)expected outcome-reference to previous research-explanation-exemplification-deduction and hypothesis. Walaupun begitu, setiap penulis memiliki pilihan moves tertentu dari segi urutan moves dan frekuensi kemunculannya. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa penulis-penulis Indonesia tersebut memilih pola retorikanya disesuaikan dengan konteks dan komunitas pembaca artikel penelitian di jurnal ilmiah yang mereka pilih.Kata Kunci: Penulis Indonesia, artikel penelitian (RA), bagian pembahasan, pola retorika
