In the former case the carbonitrile was recovered essentially unchanged, and in the latter the product obtained from the reaction consisted of a mixture of carbonitrile I1 (67%) and amine I (19.8%). Reduction of carboxamide I11 with lithium aluminium hydride alone gave the carbonitrile 11, in 92% yield, as the only isolable product. The
