The article presents experimental results of the metal-based and carbon nanotube additives influence on sorption kinetics of a silica-gel-based adsorption bed in an adsorption chiller. The purpose of the doping is to improve the efficiency of sorption processes within the bed by use of metallic and non-metallic additives characterized by higher thermal diffusivity than basic adsorption material. The higher the thermal conductivity of the bed, the faster the sorption processes take place, which directly translates into greater efficiency of the refrigerator. In this study, sorption kinetics of pure silica gel sorbent doped with a given amount of aluminum (Al) and copper (Cu) powders and carbon nanotubes (CNT) were analyzed. The tests were performed on DVS Dynamic Gravimetric Vapor Sorption System apparatus used for dynamic vapor sorption measurements. A decrease in the amount of adsorbed water was observed with an increase in the mass share of the additives in the performed studies. Experimental results show that, CNTs seems to be the most promising additive as the sorption process time was reduced with the smallest decrease in water uptake. Any significant reduction of adsorption time was noted in case of the Al addition. Whereas, in case of Cu doping, delamination of the mixture was observed.
Adsorption chillers produce cold energy, using heat instead of electricity, thus reducing electrical energy consumption. A major industrial waste, fly ash, can be converted to zeolite and used in adsorption chillers as an adsorbent. In this research, three different types of zeolites were synthesised from fly ash via a hydrothermal reaction in an alkaline solution (NaOH). The obtained samples (Na-A zeolites) were modified with K2CO3 to increase the water adsorption capacity of these samples. Phase and morphology analyses shows that desired zeolites formed properly but other crystalline phases also exist along with nonporous amorphous phases. The determined specific surface areas for Na-A zeolite (12 h) and Na-A zeolite (24 h) are 45 m2/g and 185 m2/g respectively, while the specific surface area for synthesized 13X zeolite is almost negligible. Water-isotherm for each of these samples was measured. Considering the application of adsorption chillers, average adsorption capacity was very low, 1.73% and 1.27%, respectively, for the two most probable operating conditions for synthesized 13X zeolite, whereas no water was available for the evaporation from Na-A zeolite (12 h) and Na-A zeolite (24 h). This analysis implies that among the synthesized materials only 13X zeolite has a potential as an adsorber in sorption chillers.
Solar-powered adsorption chillers are a particularly interesting alternative to energy-intensive conventional refrigeration systems. Integration of the adsorption chiller with solar collectors is a very promising concept since the increase in solar radiation coincides with the increased demand for cooling. Such a solution is very economical and environmentally friendly. It also fits in with current trends related to energy policy and sustainable development. The article presents the results of tests conducted for a two-bed adsorption chiller integrated with solar collectors. The tests were performed on selected days of the summer period (July and August) at the KEZO Research Centre PAS in Jablonna (Poland). Based on the results obtained, the performance parameters of the adsorption chiller were determined, and the problems associated with the integration of all components of the system were identified and discussed. The values of the determined Coefficient of Performance (COP) and cooling capacity for the tested adsorption chiller are, depending on the day on which the tests were conducted, from 0.531 to 0.692 and from 5.16 kW to 8.71 kW, respectively. Analysis of the test results made it possible to formulate conclusions related to the design of integrated systems of adsorption chillers with solar collectors.
Adsorption chillers with desalination functionality, being devices characterised by very low electricity consumption, provide an alternative to conventional sources of cooling and water. The option of desalinating water means that the use of a single device enables obtaining two useful products. Adsorption chillers are not widely used at present. due to their low performance characteristics; these are, however, constantly being improved. This paper presents a verification of the possibility of increasing the cooling coefficient of performance (COP) and specific cooling power (SCP) of a laboratory adsorption chiller by optimising the length of cycle times and using a copper additive to silica gel with a mass fraction of 15% to increase heat transport in the bed. The choice of copper among other considered additives was determined by the conclusions from the research on the sorption kinetics of various mixtures, price and availability, and a high thermal conductivity. The device was operated in a two-bed mode aimed at producing cooling. The adsorbate was distilled water. The results were compared with those obtained under similar conditions when the beds were only filled with silica gel. As a result of the testing, it was found that the use of the copper additive with the sorbent increased both the COP and SCP. The tests were performed for different cycle times, of 100, 200, 300 and 600 s. With increasing cycle time COP also increased. In contrast, the specific cooling power increased only up to a certain point, whereafter its value decreased.
Adsorption cooling technology is a promising alternative to replace conventional solutions. However, adsorption chillers still need to be improved in terms of performance parameters. One of the most important factors affecting their efficiency is the characteristics of the adsorbent, which should have the highest adsorption capacity and enable efficient heat transport in the bed. The objective of this paper is to present current developments in the field of composite sorbents with silica gel matrix as modern and very promising materials and then perform a detailed analysis of them. The paper summarises the methods of synthesis of composite sorbents and the current knowledge concerning these materials. The analysis focuses on a comparison of the available data, particular taking into account the types of matrixes, so that the analysis provides a clear and qualitative basis for further research. As a result of exploring the state of the art, this subject is found to be insufficiently described; therefore, these materials are comprehensively analysed in terms of their properties and the impact of their use on the COP (coefficient of performance) and SCP (specific cooling power) of adsorption chillers. Based on the analysis of the literature, the most promising directions for further research are also indicated.
