ObjectiveTo evaluate the accuracy and precision of HemoCue 201 (HemoCue) and Masimo Pronto 7 (Masimo) devices for measuring hemoglobin (Hb) in epidemiological studies, having venous blood samples as a gold standard.Material and methodsWe measured Hb concentrations in a field sample of 148 children from one to five years of age. Masimo and HemoCue were used for capillary blood samples and an automatic analyzer for venous blood samples. Regression models with no intercept were constructed to measure precision and predictability, concordance correlations to measure accuracy and precision, and Bland-Altman limits of agreement as well as hierarchical linear models to estimate variance.ResultsBoth HemoCue and Masimo underestimated Hb concentrations compared to the gold standard. They respectively yielded the following results: regression coefficients of 0.887 and 0.876 with 98.7% and 98.6% predictability; concordance correlation coefficients of 0.183 (p<0.001) and 0.166 (p<0.001); and Bland-Altman variances of -1.51 and -1.62. With regard to Masimo specifically, the three-level Hierarchical Linear Model showed that 57.9% of total variance stemmed from random errors in repeated measures from the same subject.ConclusionsHemoCue and Masimo measure lower Hb concentrations than the gold standard. Their accuracy and precision levels are comparable. It is essential to ensure proper use of devices through enhanced training of field workers.

ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to describe the prevalence of overweight and obesity (OW +O) and to assess its association with some risk factor in a probabilistic sample of Mexican scholars.MethodsInformation from 34,045 children (>6 y) extracted from the Mexican National Health in Publics Schools Survey in Mexico (ENSE‐2008) was included in the analysis. We examined body mass index (BMI) in relation to demographic variables, sweet beverages consumption, and physical activity.ResultsOur results revealed that 1 of every 3 Mexican school children had OW+O (32.3%).The prevalence of overweight and obesity was adjusted by sex, age, region of dwelling (North, Center, South and Mexico City), and consumption of sweet beverages. The prevalence of OW +O was associated with aged children (>10y OR 1.15, p< 0.001); Sex (boys: OR 1.2 p=0.025; consumption of sweet beverages (1.1, p=0.008).ConclusionsOverweight and obesity is becoming a public health problem in Mexico. It should be approached through aggressive interventions targeted to school age children at risk, in order to reduce rapidly the prevalence of overweight and obesity, thus limiting its negative short‐ and long‐term effects on other health outcomes. We constructed regression models with no intercept, for precision and predictability; concordance correlations for accuracy and precision; Band and Altman limits of agreement, and thierarchical linear models for measurement system variance diagnostics.ResultsBoth devices under estaimated Hb concentartions compared with gold standard. Hemocue and Masimo devices have regression coefficients of 0.887 and 0.876 with predictability of 98.7% and 98.6% respectively. Concordance correlation coefficients for Hemocue was 0.18341, (p<0.001) and for Masimo 0.16638, (p<0.001). Bland and Altman showed a difference of −1.51 for Hemocue and −1.62 for Masimo. The three level hierarchical linear model shows that 57.9% of the total variance for Masimo came from repeated measure on same subjects.ConclusionsHemocue and Masimo measure less concentrations of Hb than the gold standard. The accuracy and presicion of Hb measurements with Hemocue and Masimo devices are very similar in the field. Devices should be used properly in field work, based on enhanced training schedules.
Objective: To assess the food and drinks intake as well as their calorie value throughout school recess in a 9 to 11 years old children simple.Methods: Transversal study, using a random sample of 370 children from 109 Mexican schools. Food consumption during recess was registered, collecting for each food the name, type, amount and source (home or purchased at the school). Metric units (g or ml) were estimated for the total consumed portions, energy, macro and micronutrients were calculated. Results: Children who consumed home prepared foods during recess, shown an average energy intake of 242 kcal whereas for those who purchase them food at school was 343.3 kcal. In the case of the children who consume home food and also purchase food the average kcal increases to 421.5. Regarding protein, sugars, total, trans and saturated fats and sodium the intake was lower among the children that consumed only home prepared food compared with those who purchase and/or eat food from home. Conclusions: Energy intake during recess in children that purchase food at school is greater than the 276 kcal recommendation for the lunch. In spite of the government regulations about food sale in Mexican schools.
