A A b b s s t t r r a a c c t t -----------------------------------------The New Economic Geography framework supports the idea that economic integration plays an important role in explaining urban concentration. By using Fujita et al. (1999) as a theoretical motivation, and information on the 5 most important cities of 84 countries, we find that the size of main cities declines and the size of secondary cities increases as a result of external trade. Similar results are obtained for cities with a population over a million. However, cities with a large fraction of the urban population grow independently of their position in the urban ranking. The implications for urban planners and development economists is that investment in infrastructure must take place in secondary cities when a country is involved in a process of trade liberalization, especially, those located near ports.--
By partially following Head and Mayer's (2003) suggestions, in this paper we test Puga's (1999) fundamental bell-shaped relationship between trade openness and agglomeration in the industrial sector. The main result is that concentration of both employment and production may arise if a pair of countries is involved in a process of trade liberalization.
This paper incorporates taste heterogeneity, as a dispersion force, into Fujita et al.'s New Economic Geography model. By doing so, agglomeration of both firms and workers is the result of market and non-market interactions. We analyze the outcomes of the original model vis--vis the outcomes of its extension. In particular, we assess the impact of international trade openness on cities' size. Two main general predictions arise from such a departure. First, the breakpoint with taste heterogeneity is higher than the breakpoint associated without it. Second, for low levels of trade openness urban agglomeration is attenuated with taste heterogeneity. Finally, based upon particular values of the parameters of the model, market outcomes converge to the optimal social welfare outcomes as taste heterogeneity increases. Agglomeration economies, amen...
This article analyzes the causal relationship between China’s outward foreign direct investment (FDI) and several governance indicators by performing a panel data analysis for Latin American countries. First, a long-term relationship was found between China’s outward FDI and three governance indicator variables: control of corruption (CC), regulatory quality (QR), and government effectiveness (GE). This result supports the idea that there is a statistical relationship between FDI and the governance indicators. We also found evidence of causality from FDI to CC, implying that after Chinese investment there is a change in the host country’s perception of corruption. In addition, causality from QR and GE to FDI was found. The result is evidence of how outward FDI effects the host country government’s ability to implement policies and regulations which promote private investment and the quality of public services.
