Työelämän toimintaympäristöjen muutokset haastavat asiantuntijoiden viestintäosaamisen. Verkostomainen kansainvälinen toiminta ja digitaalisuus ovat johtaneet tilanteeseen, jossa on selkeytettävä, miten teknologian välityksellä viestitään ja millaista osaamista teknologiavälitteinen viestintä vaatii. Teknologiavälitteistä viestintäosaamista lähestytään tässä tutkimuksessa digitaalisen osaamisen viitekehyksen avulla huomioiden myös viestintään liittyvät eettiset tekijät (Ferrari 2013). Tutkimus vastaa seuraaviin kysymyksiin: Mitä viestintäkanavia viestintään käytetään? Mitä osaamista näillä viestiminen vaatii? Mitä teknologiavälitteisen viestintäosaamisen alueita työelämässä tulisi kehittää? Tutkimuksen aineisto on kerätty kyselylomakkeella (N=98). Tutkimuksen mukaan asiantuntijatyössä yksikään teknologivälitteisen viestinnän osa-alueista ei yllä edellytetylle osaamistasolle. Osaamiskuilu ei ole kuitenkaan suuri, mutta tulosten mukaan uhkakuvana on sen suureneminen etenkin asiantuntijatehtävissä, joissa vuorovaikutus eri kulttuurien välillä ja verkostomaisuus lisääntyvät. Asiantuntijoilta edellytetään entistä enemmän viestintäosaamista ja ennen kaikkea eettisen toiminnan ymmärtämistä teknologian välityksellä viestittäessä.
Graduate employability research typically focuses on young graduates' entry to the labour market. Little is known about the careers of adults who attain higher education degrees in mid-life. This article explores Finnish University of Applied Sciences (UAS) Master's degree graduates' midcareer trajectories using retrospectively collected longitudinal survey data (N = 1025) on their employment relations, transitions and career breaks. The specific research questions are as follows: (1) What are the types of mid-career trajectories of the adult graduates with Finnish UAS Master's degree? (2) What is the prevalence of the different career trajectories among the sample of graduates? ( 3) In what ways different career trajectories are able to take advantage of graduation with a Master's degree? As a result, we recognised five types of mid-career trajectories: rising career, renewing career, entrepreneurial career, continuous career and unstable career. Adult degrees can re-orient and enhance different career trajectories, e.g. by providing formal qualifications, new expertise and entrepreneurial skills, as well as by validating prior experience. Understanding the nature of career trajectories of adult graduates at a Master's level is interesting not only in the Finnish but also in the international context and this study opens up a rich array of opportunities for further studies.
The aim of this study was to identify which media is chosen for Computed-mediated Communication (CMC) in multicultural business interactions when the main language of communication is English as a lingua franca. The second aim was to determine how the results of this study should be taken into consideration at Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) in curriculum development. The analyses employed in this survey followed Media synchronicity theory (MST), originally proposed by Dennis/Valacich (1997) and later refined by Dennis et al. (2008). This study was conducted using a mixed method approach with data from a quantitative survey regarding media usage of 274 respondents and qualitative theme interviews of five working life representatives. The findings indicate that the choice of media varies between different countries and is dependent on the different capabilities and synchronicity of the media. The team structure, communication processes, choice of language, cultural diversity and ethical rules of the company play an important role in communication and are meaningful when choosing the media for communication. The main conclusion is that the ability to choose the media that is suitable for varying communicative situations in working life has become essential and therefore needs to be developed as part of curriculum development work at HEIs.
