Background/Aims:This study examined prevalence and risk factors of periodontitis in representative samples of Korean adults, with and without diabetes mellitus (DM).Methods:Data from the 2012 Korean National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey were analyzed. A total of 4,477 adults (≥ 30 years old) were selected from 8,057 individuals who completed a nutrition survey, a self-reported general health behavior questionnaire, an oral examination, an oral hygiene behaviors survey, and laboratory tests. DM was defined as a fasting plasma glucose ≥ 126 mg/dL, or self-reported diagnosed diabetes, or current use of oral hypoglycemic agents and/or insulin. The community periodontal index was used to assess periodontitis status and comparisons between the periodontitis and the non-periodontitis group, were performed, according to the presence of DM. Risk factors for periodontitis in adults with DM and without DM were evaluated by multiple logistic regression analysis.Results:The prevalence of periodontitis was significantly higher in adults with DM (43.7%) than in those without DM (25%, p < 0.001). In adults without DM, risk factors for periodontitis were older age, male, urban habitation, waist circumference, smoking, oral pain, and less frequent tooth brushing. Significant risk factors for periodontitis in adults with DM were the smoking, oral pain, and not-using an oral hygiene product.Conclusions:Adults with DM have an increased risk of periodontitis than those without DM. Current smoking and oral pain increase this risk. Using an oral hygiene product can reduce risk of periodontal disease in adults with DM.
Comparing the treatment effects between MCPP appliances and buccal miniscrews, the MCPP appliances showed greater distalization and intrusion with less distal tipping of the first molar and less extrusion of the incisor compared to the buccal miniscrews.
The purpose of this study was to investigate differences in the alignment pattern of the collapsed maxillary arch following fixed orthodontic treatment (FOT) in bilateral cleft lip and palate (BCLP) patients according to collapse type. Fifteen BCLP patients were divided into Group 1 (anteroposterior-collapsed arch, n = 7) and Group 2 (transverse-collapsed arch, n = 8) according to maxillary arch shape before FOT. Linear and angular variables of lateral cephalograms and dental models were evaluated before (T1) and after FOT (T2), and statistical analysis was performed. In cephalometric measurements at T1, both the groups exhibited retrusive maxillae, a Class III relationship, and lingual inclination of U1-SN. At T2, significant improvement of U1-SN was observed in both the groups (P < 0.01 in Group 1; P < 0.05 in Group 2). In the model measurements at T1, the inter-second premolar width (IP2W), inter-first molar width (IM1W), and left segmental angle were smaller in Group 2 than in Group 1 (IP2W, P < 0.001; IM1W, P < 0.05; LSA, P < 0.05). From T1 to T2, the arch width increased significantly in Group 2 (inter-canine width, IP1W, IP2W, and IM1W; all P < 0.05), but not in Group 1. Therefore, there were significant differences in ΔIP2W (2.4 mm versus 14.9 mm, P < 0.01) and ΔIM1W (-0.7 mm versus 5.9 mm, P < 0.001) between Groups 1 and 2. In both the groups, the molar depth and right and left segmental angles increased significantly, while the premaxillary rotation angle decreased significantly (molar depth, RSA, LSA, and PMRA; all P < 0.05). The alignment strategy for the maxillary premolar and molar areas should be modified according to arch shape in BCLP patients.
Three-dimensional (3D) printing technologies have been widely used to manufacture crowns and frameworks for fixed dental prostheses. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess the reliability of the marginal fit of 3D-printed cobalt-chromium-based fixed dental prostheses in comparison to conventional casting methods. Articles published until 25 June 2020, reporting the marginal fit of fixed prostheses fabricated with metal 3D printing, were searched using electronic literature databases. After the screening and quality assessment, 21 eligible peer-reviewed articles were selected. Meta-analysis revealed that the marginal gap of the prostheses manufactured using 3D printing was significantly smaller compared to that manufactured using casting methods (standard mean difference (95% CI): −0.92 (−1.45, −0.38); Z = −3.37; p = 0.0008). The estimated difference between the single and multi-unit types did not differ significantly (p = 0.3573). In the subgroup analysis for the measurement methods, the tendency of marginal discrepancy between the 3D printing and casting groups was significantly different between articles that used direct observation and those that used the silicone replica technique (p < 0.001). Metal 3D printing technologies appear reliable as an alternative to casting methods in terms of the fit of the fixed dental prostheses. In order to analyze the factors influencing manufacturing and confirm the results of this review, further controlled laboratory and clinical studies are required.
