Students’ writing quality has become the focus of education research nowadays. A good quality writing should fulfil the requirements of coherence and cohesion. Coherence shows how the sentences in the text are arranged which usually follow certain structure, and cohesion shows how they are connected to each other. This study aims to investigate the students’ writing quality in both aspects. Using systemic functional linguistics approach, 10 students’ writing on recount text is analysed. The result of the study reveals how good the students on the fourth semester can write the text and what devices they use to establish the quality. This study aims to describe phrases and compound words that have ABSTRAKPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui, menganalisis dan mendeskripsikan frasa dan kata majemuk yang memiliki fungsi dan makna dalam puisi. Sumber data penelitian adalah dua puisi dari Don Quixote. Teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan teknik pembacaan dan teknik pencatatan atau simak catat dan dianalisis dengan teknik analisis deksriptif kualitatif secara formal dan informal.Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa (1) jenis frasa yang ditemukan dalam kumpulan puisi ini ada lima, yaitu: frasa determiner/FD, frasa nominal (FN), frasa verba (FV), frasa ajektiva (F Adj.) dan frasa preposisional (F Prep.). (2) Fungsi yang dibedakan menjadi 3, yaitu referensial, puitis/estetis dan komunikatif. (3) Makna yang ada dalam sajak terdiri dari 5 yaitu denotatif, gramatikal, kiasan, idiom dan konotatif. (4) Fungsi frasa dan kata majemuk dalam sajak.
Self-actualization is term that is commonly used in psychology theories. The term can be simply translated as the full realization of someone’s potential or true self. This study was conducted to analyze the life journey of the main character of The Bell Jar in achieving herself-actualization. The purposes of this study are to describe the character of the main character in The Bell Jar and to describe the main character in achieving self-actualization and how it is portrayed in the novel. This study was done using a descriptive qualitative method and using Maslow's Hierarchy of Human Needs theory and New Criticism theory to explain the main character and her journey in achieving self-actualization in the form of words. The object of the study was the novel The Bell Jar and this study focused on Esther Greenwood as the main character. List of an observational sheet was used as the research instrument and the data was taken through library research. The analysis was conducted by interpreting Esther’s utterances and actions using New Criticism theory to describe Esther’s characterization and Maslow’s Hierarchy of Human Needs theory to describe Esther’s self-actualization. The study results showed that Esther’s self-actualization is the results of her being able to fulfill her previous stages both directly and indirectly before reaching self-actualization stage along her life journey. This research is carried out to find out how Borderline Personality Disorder influencing an individual self-concept in Haruki Murakami’s Norwegian Wood. There are several research methods used in this study, they are library research and descriptive qualitative research. By using the library research method, the writer found the data and references dealing with the topic analysis. The data then is written in descriptive in order to answer the research questions, the writer also employed psychoanalysis theory by Sigmund Freud to analyze how self-concept is the result of Borderline Personality Disorder. The result indicates that Naoko, the center of the research, is struggling to survive because she has a traumatic past events. The character developed five criteria of a person to have Borderline Personality Disorder, they are problem with relationships, unstable emotions, unstable identity, impulsive and self-damaging behavior, and unstable thinking/cognition which developed by the character. Then, there are defenses, anxiety and core issues that influence the behavior of the character. Self-concept is using by the represented character as the result of borderline personality disorder that revealed in the id, ego, and superego.

Morrison in her novels depicts the behaviors as one realization of discrimination. Seeing the data concerning on the construction of black people as differentiated ethnic group culturally that becomes a discourse to be rejected, this article aims at explaining the construction of black people as differentiated ethnic group culturally that becomes a discourse to be rejected. The analysis arrives at the question about the differentiation as a means of difficult acceptance.
