Success factors of expatriate leaders in a globalized world depend highly on selective competencies. Each competency have a wide set of skills associated with it. This paper attempted to present an investigation for the assessment of a competency such as cultural intelligence on socio-cultural adaptation for expatriate leaders working in different organizations in Malaysia. The hypotheses developed in this study were tested through primary data collected using the survey method. Purposive sampling technique has been used to collect 210 responses. Exploratory factor analysis and structural equation modelling techniques were used to analyze the data. The findings revealed that cultural intelligence and socio-cultural adaptation influence expatriate leaders and the dimensions of cultural intelligence influence the performance of expatriate leaders mediated by socio-cultural adaptation. Organizations can get benefit greatly from incorporating cultural intelligence competency development for expatriate leaders in global positions. It will help the expatriate leaders to meet new and exciting challenges, and targets rapidly and performs efficiently.
This article is about online publishing in a political party like UMNO by looking at its functions applied in the field of communication. This political party applies the development of online publishing by using UMNO Online as the party’s official website. This study focuses specifically on the function of the UMNO Onlinecreated in online political news publishing in Malaysia and the UMNO Onlinefactor established as well as how the development of online political publishing to reflect the background of the study. The function of UMNO Online is based on the scope of the study, namely the content published in June 2011 will be examined based on the role of UMNO Online in addressing these issues through ethical news writing, with an emphasis on the pattern of news published. In addition, the evolution of communication has influenced UMNO, which has also changed with the existence of websites in the association as a new platform for the party, based on the latest developments that also require the use of technology. The development of UMNO Online which started from a special unit and through various changes that eventually became a news portal that is interactive in nature by combining all media. The results of the research found that current developments motivate UMNO as a political party that holds some of the leadership role in the country’s administration also undergoes transformation using cyber media. Through the study, it can be concluded that UMNO Online plays a news role in rejecting the allegations made by the opposition party.
Discussion of Orientalism through Semiotic Analysis in Animation ABSTRACT This study reveals, interprets and understands the oriental influence in Saladin: The Animated Series through the semiotic analysis of Roland Barthes. This study looks at the semiotic elements found in the animated series through a system of signs and this conceptual framework of Barthes is divided into two components, signifier and signified. This sign system is used to look at the symbols through frames in this animation. The analysis of this study examines the changes in the title, poster, use of language, which led to the occurrence of orientalism discourse to disgrace the Islamic figure, Salahuddin al-Ayubi. The findings of the study found that the Westerners used Saladin as a title and not Salahuddin al-Ayubi. Next, the changes in the portrayal of Islamic figure in the poster of the animated film Saladin and Saladin: The Animated Series. There was confusion when the main character of this animated series, Saladin, was not placed in the middle of the poster. Each of the posters shows the influence of orientalism. In terms of language use, the animated series shows the acceptance of external influences such as the use of English as the primary language. The Arabic language is used for the audience in the Middle East and the Malay language is positioned only as a subtitle. The results show that orientalism tarnishes the identity of this Islamic figure. Keywords: Orientalism, semiotic, sign system, signifier, signified.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the experiences of advertising practitioners and advertising agencies creative teams in Malaysia specifically within the process of modifying creative output with reference to the two self-regulatory rules that govern the advertising industry in Malaysia. Players in the industry are required to take responsibility and abide by the rules outlined in two Advertising Self-Regulations (ASR) that are part of the Malaysian Code of Advertising Practise and the Communications and Multimedia Content Forum of Malaysia. In this study, in-depth interviews were conducted as a part of the qualitative method to get critical feedback on the holistic view of ASR. A total of nine informants representing three categories of senior industry insiders such as regulators, advertising practitioners and creative agency members were involved through in-depth interviews through the selection of purposive sampling method. The study has revealed many advertising practitioners have recognised their internal and external duties to guarantee a favourable image from the creative material they generated or authorised. Which have also reflected mostly positive outcomes through the concept of knowledge, relevancy, and acceptance of the code of practise.
This article focuses on the rise of Islamic values in media with concern to the film industry in Indonesia. In this nation, 88.22% of 254 million of the population are Muslims. However, this substantial quantity is burden some ifMuslims have a lack of appreciation to history and are intellectually weak. In addition, cultural degradation due to the rapid changes in information & communication technology diminishes moral and ethics of society. The growth of film industry in the Soeharto era which curb freedom of expression and media resulted in films which were more oriented to comedy, horror, and vulgar. The aims of this study specifically are: (1) to identify the film industry (macro) in the context of challenge of Indonesian Muslim in social and culture; (2) to analyze the political interests of film production company owner (meso) in his films; (3) to conduct textual analysis (micro) of two films which include Islamic values in the dialogues. Two films, Nagabonar Jadi 2 (Nagabonar Become 2) and Alangkah Lucunya Negeri Ini (How Funny This Country Is), were selected as samples for their contents that fearlessly criticize corrupt governance and promote integrity and good deeds. The three dimensions of critical discourse which was proposed by Norman Fairlough (1992) was used to evaluate the local film industry from the perspective of macro, meso, and micro. The macro-analysis found that Indonesian films act should be modified to keep up with modernized and recent trends in media and film industry. The meso analysis showed that competition between film companies are very though, however, film quality determines the popularity of the company in public. According to the company owner's agenda, Deddy Mizwar determines the quality of films produced, instead of quantity, as apriority. Thus, in post-reform era, the freedom of expression which enforced by the Act No. 9 of 1998, the company start producing Islamic films. Deddy Mizwar concerns for society are not only through the media but also political. He recently elected as the deputy governor of West Java province with the full support of an Islamic Party (Partai Keadilan Sejahtera). The textual studies have found similarities of the Islamic values in the content of the two films which are tawaqal (trust and reliance on God) and Taqwa, the pursuit of knowledge, respecting for the elderly, and belief in the Hereafter.
