This paper aims to provide an explanation of the relation of historical education with the process of nation character building in Indonesia. This study uses literature review method. The results show that historical education has a very strategic role to shape the character and identity of the Indonesian nation. To be able to realize it, the curriculum must be considered in historical education, learning process, as well as historical learning materials. The history curriculum must be able to accommodate the interests of the nation character building process. Furthermore, the learning process of history must also be able to optimize the process of internalization and actualization of values in historical events. Finally, historical material must be able to collaborate on academic and pedagogical elements.
Nani Wartabone is one of the Indonesian nationalist leaders who came from Gorontalo. Nationalism of Nani Wartabone implemented in the form of various movements of resistance against Dutch colonial rule, the Japanese military occupation, revolution in defending independence, until the threat of national disintegration Indonesia after independence. Nani Wartabones' nationalism is not nationalism that leads to chauvinism, but a nationalism that has come from an egalitarian view and leaning on humanitarian aspects. Thus, nationalism of Nani Wartabone is very important if it is implemented in the present life as a cornerstone of the nation character building of Indonesia. This writing will analyze how the concept of Nani Wartabones' nationalism, and its implementation in the present.
THE DEVELOPMENT OF ISLAMIC EDUCATION AND HUMANIZATION IN GORONTALO IN EARLY 20th CENTURY. This research aims to explain the development of Islamic education and its role in the process of humanization in Gorontalo in early 20th century. The presented explanation is the historical explanation, so the method used in this research is the historical research method with research measures: heuristic, sources verification, interpretation, and historiography. The results showed that the development of Islamic education in Gorontaloin early 20th century was very rapid and motivated by three things: firts, access to education, transportation, and more open information; second, the internal view of Islam itself about the importance of science; and third, as a response of to the massive spread of christianity by the Dutch colonial goverment. The existence of Islamic schools has given a great contribution to humanity. The increasing number of schools established by Islamic organizations in Gorontalo, has provided the opportunity for indigenous groups to acquire education. This paper aims to analyze how the role of historical education in the establishment of multicultural awareness of students. The research used literature study method. The sources collected were then analyzed. The results show that historical education as one of the important instruments in the nation character building, has a strategic role in shaping multicultural awareness of students. Multicultural awareness referred to in this research is the awareness and recognition about the existence of ethnic, cultural, and so on, so as to strengthen tolerance in the life of the nation and state. Student multicultural awareness is formed from the understanding of past events that have multicultural values. The events referred to existed during the period of the national movement, for in that period the Indonesian nation discovered the concept of national integration and recognition of diversity.
