Background In early the COVID‐19 pandemic, routine dental treatments have been delayed due to the risk of disease transmission. This delay may lead public to search for information on the Internet for a solution. Objectives This study aims to evaluate the public interest in dentistry in the early months of the COVID‐19 global pandemic in the selected countries. Methods The daily numbers of new COVID‐19 cases were recorded for China, South Korea, Italy, Germany, Russia, Ukraine and Turkey. For these countries, Internet search interest of the keyword ‘dentistry’, ‘ coronavirus ’, ‘COVID‐19’, ‘SARS‐CoV‐2’ and ‘pandemic’ in the early months of the COVID‐19 pandemic was evaluated by using Google Trends data. Results In most countries included the public Internet search interest in ‘dentistry+coronavirus+COVID‐19+SARS‐CoV‐2+pandemic’ peaked prior to the peak of new COVID‐19 cases. While a statistically significant positive correlation was observed between the number of new cases and Google Trends data in China, South Korea, Italy and Germany, a statistically significant negative correlation was observed in Turkey. Conclusion The peak public interest in dentistry has been prior to the peak of COVID‐19 new cases in most countries. The use of Internet data can provide useful information about pandemics and many other diseases.
Objective: As the incidence of oropharyngeal cancer associated with human papillomavirus has increased rapidly in recent years, the role of dentists on this issue is also increasing. This study aims to determine the knowledge and awareness of dentists and dental students about human papillomavirus vaccination and the relationship of oropharyngeal cancer. Methods: A total of 209 participants, consisting of 82 dentists and 127 dental students filled out the questionnaires about the general human papillomavirus knowledge, human papillomavirus-oropharyngeal cancer relationship, and human papillomavirus vaccination. The Fisher Exact and the Mann Whitney U tests were used for determining the difference between the two groups. Results: The majority of the respondents answered the general questions about human papillomavirus correctly. Almost all of the participants in our study were found to have high awareness about the human papillomavirus-oropharyngeal cancer relationship, most of them did not have enough information about the human papillomavirus-related oropharyngeal cancers have a better prognosis than other oropharyngeal cancers. Both dentists and dental students stated that they did not think they had enough information about human papillomavirus vaccination. Dental students were more conscious and more motivated than dentists in recommending human papillomavirus vaccination to their patients (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Our study showed that dentists and dentistry students had a high level of knowledge in general subjects related to human papillomavirus. It was determined that the knowledge of both groups was insufficient regarding the human papillomavirus-oropharyngeal cancer relationship and human papillomavirus vaccination, and the participants were eager to overcome these shortcomings.
Objective: Current study focuses on the formulation and characterization of lipophilic and hydrophilic gel formulations of nifedipine to treat anal fissure via anodermal application. Methods: Lipophilic gels were prepared with Aerosil grades as gelling agents in bulk oils. Polyethylene glycols, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, and Carbopol® 974P were used as gelling agents in water and propylene glycol for forming hydrophilic gels. The effect of repeated Freeze-Thaw Cycles (FT-C) on microstructures of the gels was investigated by examining viscosity, rheology and textural properties. Aerosil 200 containing lipophilic gels exhibited thixotropic behavior with plastic flow properties and higher viscosities. Result: Accordingly, their compressibility and adhesiveness increased. FT-C caused notable changes in microstructures and textural properties of the lipophilic gels excluding the formulation containing Aerosil 200-in-isopropyl myristate. Among the hydrophilic gels, the viscosity of Carbopol® 974P gels increased depending on the amount of polymer, triethanolamine and water; these gels featured plastic flow without thixotropic behavior. Their compressibility and adhesiveness were higher than other gel formulations with stable post-FT-C characteristics. The higher flux values of nifedipine were observed from water containing Carbopol® 974P gel. Conclusion: The results of the stability tests showed that the Carbopol® 974P gel had a longer shelf life than the Aerosil 200-in-isopropyl myristate gel.
Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate the levels of depression, stress, and anxiety of dentists redeployed to filiation during the COVID-19 pandemic and to determine the factors that caused any changes observed. Methods: An online questionnaire was sent to dentists redeployed to filiation due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The questionnaire consisted of three parts: I) demographic characteristics, II) working conditions in filiation, and III) the DASS-21 scale, which evaluates the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress states of participants. Results: 206 (164 female, 42 male) voluntary dentists participated in the study. Off all participants, 77.2% had symptoms of depression, 73.8% had symptoms of anxiety, and 59.7% had symptoms of stress. All subscales of the DASS-21 were statistically significantly higher in females than in males, in single dentists than in married dentists, and in those living alone than in those living with family or friends. Among the dentists redeployed to filiation during the COVID-19 pandemic, female gender, living alone, and working at a university were found to be effective factors that constituted the high scores of any of the DASS-21 subscales. Conclusion: Dentists who were redeployed to filiation during the COVID-19 pandemic stated that they were negatively emotionally affected. Dentists can always be redeployed to the public health method in case of social emergencies. Therefore, dentists need to be trained and motivated for redeployment.
