Of the recent trends in corporate governance, the ethical conduct of managers is one of the most challenging tasks facing business enterprises. This research identifies major themes in order to understand reasons for employee misconduct. From eight large size business enterprises, in-depth interviews were conducted among human resource managers who investigated severe unethical conducts in companies which results in employee termination. The findings indicate that the main reason of employee misconduct was identified with personal or financial gain. The main themes of misconduct are identified as social norms, process loopholes, small scale dishonesty and pressure for performance. The qualitative research findings identify emerging patterns of reasons for employee misconduct consistent with agency theory and psychological contract theory.
As performance appraisal method known as multisource feedback (MSF) or 360° feedback was popular in Western organizations for decades, it is questionable if the practice will offer similar benefits at international level. In this article, the literature on multisource feedback and comparative culture is reviewed. Based upon practices suggested by recent literature, a research was conducted at the two large-size organizations in Thailand. This research found that managers can accept the multisource feedback for development purpose. Negative cultural implications can be avoided while maintaining the merits of multisource feedback for employee development.
Of the recent trends in Corporate Social Responsibility within the business sector, the ethical conduct of employees is one of the most challenging tasks facing organizations. Based on the theoretical framework of agency theory and psychological contract theory, exploratory research was conducted among 229 managers to identify the reasons behind employee misconduct in Thailand. The findings reveal that agency theory was the dominating theory explaining the reasons behind serious unethical behavior by employees. The results indicate that employees committed acts of misconduct because of greed, financial benefits, or other individual motivations. As regards the ethics management approach adopted by organizations, it was found that companies are employing compliance strategy with other various tactics to improve corporate governance. In order to improve compliance, it is recommended for companies to improve management control system to minimize wrongdoing and to be responsive to misconduct incidents. Organization development can be improved by fostering desired corporate culture, religious and philosophical beliefs.
