The advantages of oral dosage form that are responsible for its popularity are its ease of administration, patient compliance and stability of formulation. The most popular oral dosage forms beings tablets and capsules, but one important drawback of the dosage forms however is the difficulty to swallow especially when a dosage form is developed for pediatric and geriatric patient. The modern scientific and technological advancement in the pharmaceutical field had created bank of interest in reconstitutable oral suspension dosage form in the recent year. The reconstituted system is the formulation of choice when the drug stability is a major concern. Reconstitutable oral systems show the adequate chemical stability of the drug during shelf life and also reduce the weight of the final product. Dry syrup form of the drug is also useful in case of bioavailability as it has high bioavailability rather than tablets and capsules as it disintegrates in water outside of the oral cavity and directly the suspension is gone through the gastrointestinal tract. So the suspension easily absorbs in the GIT. The present review gives an account of the excipients used, methods of preparation of dry syrups along with their evaluations, their packaging, ICH guidelines.
The proximate composition and mineral constituents of Carallia brachiata leaf and fruit powder were evaluated for their nutritional values and mineral compositions by using standard techniques. In proximate analysis, ash, carbohydrate, proteins, fiber, fat, moisture, total energy content (dry basis) was assayed while mineral analysis were carried out by using atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The species showed variable results in proximate analysis of both the parts; however, the fruit of C. brachiata have revealed higher percentage of carbohydrate (65.74%) and energy values (310.25Kcal/100g). The leaf showed higher percentage of proteins (13.59%) and crude fibers (18.87%). From the results is clear that both the parts of C. brachiata are rich in micronutrients like Cu, Zn & Fe. The proximate and nutrient analysis of the species can help us to determine the health benefits achieved from their use in marginal communities.
Mangrove species have been proved as an important coastal bio-resources and most productive ecosystem of the world. In the present attempt, two mangrove species viz., Bruguiera gymnorrhiza and B. cylindrica were selected for starch isolation and characterization. Isolated starch was tested for various physico-chemical and other properties like gelatinization, amyloseamylopectin ratio, foaming capacity, emulsion capacity, particle size analysis through Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) technique, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Starch endotherms were analyzed to determine enthalpy (∆H), peak onset (T0), peak maximum (Tp), and peak conclusion (Tc) for both the mangrove species. The gelatinization enthalpy (ΔHG) of the starch from B. gymnorrhiza showed 18.71 J/g which was higher than the starch of B. cylindrica (15.98 J/g). As per particle sizing system, most of the granules ranges from 0.72-0.76 µm in B. gymnorrhiza, while granules in starch of B. cylindrica ranges from 4.5-6.5 µm in size. But SEM analysis revealed that the granules are found to be larger in size. FT-IR spectra showed that isolated starch samples of both the species exhibited slightly similar pattern. XRD patterns showed predominantly C-type crystallinity for both the species. Compared to the range of thermal and other properties of starch, it can be suggested that the range of variability was limited in both the Bruguiera species.
