Catharanthus roseus L. contain vinca alkaloid compounds which have anti-mitotic effect like colchicine. The application of Catharanthus roseus L. extract and colchicine in many plants was usually done by soaking the plant seeds. The aim of this research was to analyze the effect of ethanolic leaf extract of Catharanthus roseus L. and colchicine on seed germination of Capsicum annuum. 20 Seeds of Capsicum annuum were soaked for 24 h in ethanolic leaf extract of Catharanthus roseus L. (0,05%, 0,1% dan 0,5%), colchicine (0,05%, 0,1% dan 0,5%) and water as control. Seed germination percentage was observed and plant height was measured after 30 days. The 0,5% leaf extract and 0,5% colchicine caused the lowest germination percentage. The 0,5% leaf extract caused the lowest average plant height. Based on ANOVA and Tukey's HSD test, soaked in 0,5% ethanol leaf extract treatment was significantly different with other treatments (signification 95%)
Somongari Village, located in Purworejo District, Central Java Province, is well-known as a producer of durian and mangosteen fruits. The income of Somongari Villagers depends on this commodity, however because of durian and mangosteen can only be harvested during a specific season, the villager plans to build vegetable houses for their daily needs. Based on the data obtained through Forum Group Discussion (FGD) with representatives of the villager and farmer group, the villager had not used organic fertilizers and pesticides. The practicality and fast yield of inorganic fertilizers and pesticides are the reasons villagers use them more. In contrast, the application of inorganic fertilizers and pesticides can hurt the environment and human health. Therefore, education was carried out for the Somongari villagers to increase the knowledge and awareness of environmental sustainability and health, primarily due to inorganic fertilizer and pesticide impact. The method used in this event was include preparation (coordination and problem identification through FGD), implementation (delivery of material), evaluation, and follow-up plans. After this activity, public knowledge of the impact of inorganic fertilizers and pesticides has increased. It can be seen from the pretest and post-test scores, respectively, before and after the material's presentation. In addition, the success of this program can also be seen from the awareness of the villager to make follow-up plans related to the production of organic fertilizers and pesticides.
Background: Red dragon fruit (Hylocereus polyrhizus, (F.A.C. Weber) Britton & Rose) is widely consumed all over the world nowadays. The peel and flesh of red dragon fruit contain many bioactive compounds with high antioxidant activity. The preparation process is critical to maximizing the yield of the antioxidant content. Objective: The objectives of this research were to evaluate total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), as well as the antioxidant activity of peel and flesh of red dragon fruit prepared by various methods. Methods: The fresh and dried samples of peel and flesh of red dragon fruit were prepared via maceration and non-maceration process. Ethanol (96%) was used as the solvent in maceration. In the non-maceration process, the samples were ground using a blender and pressed using a juicer. TPC was analyzed by Folin-Ciocalteau methods, while TFC was determined by spectrophotometry UV-Vis with AlCl3. Antioxidant activity was analyzed by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and β-carotene bleaching (BCB) tests. Results: Preparation methods affect the antioxidant activity of red dragon fruit peel and flesh. The highest TPC and antioxidant activity (BCB test) can be found in the ethanolic extract of the blended peel. Both the ethanolic extracts, blended peel and blended flesh, had the same DPPH radical scavenging activity. The highest TFC can be found in the ethanolic extract of dried-peel.
