The current studies demonstrate how tourism activities have incorporated the role of festival and heritage to address socio-cultural, economic, political, and environmental issues. In the context of Indonesia, the cultural festival has been used to be one medium of Islamic preaching, since the era of Walisongo in the sixteenth century. Several local level festival appears to attract a large number of visitors which later influences the sustainability of the place, including Ya Qowiyyu Festival in Jatinom, Klaten, Central Java. Preserving the tradition for hundreds of years, the local community in Jatinom maintains this cultural practice until the present day. This research aims to explore the dynamics between the festivals of Islamic culture in Indonesia in achieving the local community wellbeing in the context of sustainable development. It utilizes qualitative inquiry that sees there are multiple, socially constructed realities. The technique used was observation and in-depth interviews with open-ended questions. The study demonstrates the success of Ya Qowiyyu Festival in addressing social, economic, and environmental issues in the area. For example, it generates community contentment and provides a financial contribution to stakeholders and local communities that enhance their wellbeing.
This paper explains theoretical studies concerning urban heritage conservation. One of the frequently occurring problems in urban heritage is obsolescence. During the rapid process of urban development, regeneration of urban historic quarters is important in establishing and maintaining the character and identity of a city. This could be done by recovering the urban areas from obsolescence through renewal of the physical fabric as well as by revitalizing their economic life. The city of Solo, Indonesia, provides an example how the Municipality through revitalization programs of several historic public open spaces has started some efforts concerning urban heritage conservation. Through the case studies, this papers tries to identify main problems faced by urban heritage of Solo especially by those historic public open spaces. It also intend to look at how the Municipality dealt with these problems through revitalization programs. It also tries to analyze several dimensions in urban conservation of both historic parks before and after the revitalization programs. This paper concludes by addressing several lessons learned from the case studies, that substantial identified problems concerning conservation and socio-cultural aspects were resolved through revitalization programs. Despite the city's success in restoring their original function as public space as well as rehabilitating the decaying structures within the areas, some challenges still remain concerning the issues of authenticity and sustainability of the urban heritage.
Light is one of the important factors in human life. Lighting especially in houses of worship is considered a very important part for symbolic and spiritual reasons. Light is the main focus in architecture, both in Islamic and Gothic architecture. The purpose of this study is to summarize the role of light in buildings of worship, especially houses of worship. This study uses a qualitative method of literature study. The results of this study indicate that the role of light in buildings of worship, especially houses of worship, is very important for the congregation, both spiritually and visually. Spiritually, the role of light can provide inner peace and also the closeness of the servant to his God. from a visual point of view the role of light can provide beauty and comfort to the room. From these results, the conclusion is that the role of light in religious buildings in the building of houses of worship is very important for worshippers, in shaping the inner kayakinan both in spiritual terms and in Visual terms
As towns and cities developed, their characteristics manifest as the uniqueness brought by the diversity among them. However, modernization had cause the uniqueness tend to fade and lose its meaning as part of the image of a city. Kampung Bandar, the oldest historic district of Pekanbaru located on the riverside of Siak River, is no longer well-known for its prominent past. There are three historic sites that is potential to be developed as the image of the district, namely Rumah Singgah Tuan Kadi, Istana Hinggap and Rumah Tenun. This paper aims to assess how a sense of place influences the city image in the historic riverside district of Kampung Bandar based on the perceptions of its inhabitants, as well as the role of landmarks as attributes of the sense of place in the formation of the historic urban district’s image. This research used a mixed-method. Qualitative methods involve in-depth interviews with experts and community leaders, whereas quantitative methods scored sites importance according to the local community. The results of the study show that Rumah Singgah Tuan Kadi have the highest sense of place and contribute significantly to the formation of the riverside urban district’s image.
The Dutch heritage that can be found in Buru Regency is the former residence of the Dutch controller. This building has historical value for Buru Regency because it is estimated that it has been established since the early 20th century and is still used today as the Office of the Civil Service Police Unit. Reuse or adaptive re-use is intended to maintain the sustainability of the building, but in doing so there are conservation ethics that must be considered so that the preservation can run well. Therefore, this study was conducted with the aim of finding out whether or not the ethics of conservation in the former Dutch controller's residence were appropriate by conducting literature studies, observing local libraries and building locations directly, and conducting interviews with building users. The results of this study found that most of the conservation ethics in the former Dutch controller's residence were not met, although some had been fulfilled.
