An extensive Insulation coordination study has been conducted for the 500-kV d.c. cables that will be installed in a tunnel under the St.-Lawrence river. These cables wUI be part of the Radisson-Nicdet section of the Quebec-New England HVDC line. This paper provides an overview of the studies and the phenomena that wUI cause decisive overvoltage stresses on the cable insulation. The basic assumptions and the simulations of these phenomena with the DCG/EPRI-released Electromagnetic Transients Program (EMTP) are also discussed. Finally, the results of the overvoltage studies and the specified insulation levels for the d.c. cables are presented.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
