[1] We present an overview of the theoretical and algorithmic aspects of the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) aerosol and surface UV algorithms. Aerosol properties are derived from two independent algorithms. The nearUV algorithm makes use of OMI observations in the 350-390 nm spectral region to retrieve information on the absorption capacity of tropospheric aerosols. OMI-derived information on aerosol absorption includes the UV Aerosol Index and absorption optical depth at 388 nm. The other algorithm makes use of the full UV-to-visible OMI spectral coverage to derive spectral aerosol extinction optical depth. OMI surface UV products include erythemally weighted daily dose as well as erythemal dose rate and spectral UV irradiances calculated for local solar noon conditions. The advantages and limitations of the current algorithms are discussed, and a brief summary of several validation and evaluation analysis carried out to assess the current level of uncertainty of these products is presented.
Environment (RIVM) NO 2 lidar. We show that NO 2 from Multi-Axis Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (MAX-DOAS) compares well with in situ measurements. We show that different MAX-DOAS instruments, operating simultaneously during the campaign, give very similar results. We also provide unique information on the spatial homogeneity and the vertical and temporal variability of NO 2 , showing that during a number of days, the NO 2 columns derived from measurements in different directions varied significantly, which implies that, under polluted conditions, measurements in one single azimuth direction are not always representative for the averaged field that the satellite observes. In addition, we show that there is good agreement between tropospheric NO 2 from OMI and MAX-DOAS, and also between total NO 2 from OMI and directsun observations. Observations of the aerosol optical thickness (AOT) show that values derived with three ground-based instruments correspond well with each other, and with aerosol optical thicknesses observed by OMI.
Abstract. The Sentinel-5 Precursor satellite was successfully launched on 13 October 2017, carrying the Tropospheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) as its single payload. TROPOMI is the next-generation atmospheric sounding instrument, continuing the successes of GOME, SCIAMACHY, OMI, and OMPS, with higher spatial resolution, improved sensitivity, and extended wavelength range. The instrument contains four spectrometers, divided over two modules sharing a common telescope, measuring the ultraviolet, visible, near-infrared, and shortwave infrared reflectance of the Earth. The imaging system enables daily global coverage using a push-broom configuration, with a spatial resolution as low as 7×3.5 km2 in nadir from a Sun-synchronous orbit at 824 km and an Equator crossing time of 13:30 local solar time. This article reports the pre-launch calibration status of the TROPOMI payload as derived from the on-ground calibration effort. Stringent requirements are imposed on the quality of on-ground calibration in order to match the high sensitivity of the instrument. A new methodology has been employed during the analysis of the obtained calibration measurements to ensure the consistency and validity of the calibration. This was achieved by using the production-grade Level 0 to 1b data processor in a closed-loop validation set-up. Using this approach the consistency between the calibration and the L1b product, as well as confidence in the obtained calibration result, could be established. This article introduces this novel calibration approach and describes all relevant calibrated instrument properties as they were derived before launch of the mission. For most of the relevant properties compliance with the calibration requirements could be established, including the knowledge of the instrument spectral and spatial response functions. Partial compliance was established for the straylight correction; especially the out-of-spectral-band correction for the near-infrared channel needs future validation. The absolute radiometric calibration of the radiance and irradiance responsivity is compliant with the high-level mission requirements, but not with the stricter calibration requirements as the available on-ground validation shows. The relative radiometric calibration of the Sun port was non-compliant. The non-compliant subjects will be addressed during the in-flight commissioning phase in the first 6 months following launch.
[1] The Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) multiwavelength algorithm has been developed to retrieve aerosol optical depth using OMI-measured reflectance at the top of the atmosphere. This algorithm was further developed by using surface reflectance data from a field campaign in Cabauw (The Netherlands), a new cloud-screening method, and a global aerosol database derived from the aerosol transport model TM5. The first results from an application of this algorithm over western Europe are presented. The OMIretrieved aerosol optical depth is evaluated by comparison with both ground-based measurements from Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) satellite data. The various aerosol optical depth values compare favorably, except in situations where large changes occur in the surface properties, which is illustrated over the Iberian peninsula. OMI and MODIS aerosol optical depth are well correlated (with a correlation coefficient of 0.66 over land and 0.79 over sea), although the multiwavelength algorithm appears to overestimate the aerosol optical depth values with respect to MODIS. The multiwavelength algorithm performs better over sea than over land. Abstract. Airborne sunphotometer measurements are used to evaluate retrievals of extinction aerosol optical depth (AOD) from spatially coincident and temporally nearcoincident measurements by the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) aboard the Aura satellite during the March 2006 Megacity Initiative-Local And Global Research Observations/Phase B of the Intercontinental Chemical Transport Experiment (MILAGRO/INTEX-B). The 14-channel NASA Ames Airborne Tracking Sunphotometer (AATS) flew on nine missions over the Gulf of Mexico and four in or near the Mexico City area. Retrievals of AOD from near-coincident AATS and OMI measurements are compared for three flights over the Gulf of Mexico for flight segments when the aircraft flew at altitudes 60-70 m above sea level, and for one flight over the Mexico City area where the aircraft was restricted to altitudes ∼320-800 m above ground level over the rural area and ∼550-750 m over the city. OMImeasured top of atmosphere (TOA) reflectances are routinely inverted to yield aerosol products such as AOD andCorrespondence to: J. M. Livingston (john.livingston@sri.com) aerosol absorption optical depth (AAOD) using two different retrieval algorithms: a near-UV (OMAERUV) and a multiwavelength (OMAERO) technique. This study uses the archived Collection 3 data products from both algorithms. In particular, AATS and OMI AOD comparisons are presented for AATS data acquired in 20 OMAERUV retrieval pixels (15 over water) and 19 OMAERO pixels (also 15 over water). At least four pixels for one of the over-water coincidences and all pixels for the over-land case were cloud-free. Coincident AOD retrievals from 17 pixels of the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard Aqua are available for two of the overwater flights and are shown to agree with AATS AODs to within root mean square (RMS) differences of 0.00-0.06, depending on wavelength. Near-coincident ground-based AOD measurements from ground-based sun/sky radiometers operated as part of the Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) at three sites in and near Mexico City are also shown and are generally consistent with the AATS AODs (which exclude any AOD below the aircraft) both in magnitude and spectral dependence. The OMAERUV algorithm retrieves AODs corresponding to a non-absorbing aerosol model for Published by Copernicus Publications on behalf of the European Geosciences Union. all three over-water comparisons, whereas the OMAERO algorithm retrieves best-fit AODs corresponding to an absorbing biomass-burning aerosol model for two of the three overwater cases. For the four cloud-free pixels in one overwater coincidence (10 March), the OMAERUV retrievals underestimate the AATS AODs by ∼0.20, which exceeds the expected retrieval uncertainty, but retrieved AODs agree with AATS values within uncertainties for the other two over-water events.
