In an agrisilvicultural system having poplar (Populus deltoides, clone G-3) as a tree component and wheat crop as an intercrop, wheat yield was studied under five age classes of poplar and compared to wheat yield under pure cropping. A substantial reduction in wheat yield (23.3%) under three-year-old poplar plantation was observed. Maximum MAI (GBH, 20 cm) was recorded in a three-year-old poplar planting. Pruning after the third year permitted some recovery in yield. The reduction in wheat yield was significantly correlated with MAI (GBH) of poplar and occurred even under one-and-two-year-old poplar plantings.
Summary Anopheles splendidus Koidzumi is an important species due to its highly variable prevalence. The cytogenetic investigations were carried out on a mountain population of this species collected from Solan (H.P.) located at an altitude of 1200 m. The standard polytene chromosome map was produced and compared with the map produced for its population prevalent in the plains near Chandigarh. The standard banding pattern of X-chromosome and the autosomal arms 2R, 2L, 3R and 3L presented homologies to a considerable extent, as nearly 80% of the DNA rich bands were comparable in the two populations. However, both differ with respect to the incidence of paracentric heterozygous inversions in the autosomes, while the X-chromosome was free from any such structural alterations. The adaptive significance of the genomic changes has been discussed in the light of ecological differences in their habitats.Production of standard polytene chromosome maps for the species of the family Culicidae are fundamental to any research objective aimed at understanding the genomic qualities of these insects of epidemiological significance. The specificity of the banding pattern has been successfully utilized in solving problems of speciation, phylogenetic relationship, cytotaxonomy, genetics of vectorial capacity and genetics of resistance to insecticides in many important species of mosquitoes
