The toxin 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) is a highly oxidizable dopamine (DA) analog that is widely used for reproducing several cell processes identified in Parkinson’s disease (PD). Due to the close similarity of its neurotoxic mechanism to those of DA, it is suitable as a model for testing the effects of potentially neuroprotective drugs. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of alpha-lipoic acid (LA) on brain oxidative stress (OS) in unilateral intrastriatal (6-OHDA) injected rats. Forty male Wistar rats, four months old (220–260 g), were evaluated. Half of them received LA (35 mg/kg i.p.) from the start to the end of the experiment. On day 2 of the trial, ten LA-supplemented rats and ten non-LA-supplemented rats were subjected to the apomorphine test. Brain homogenates were evaluated for thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity. The same evaluation procedures were repeated on day 14 with the remaining animals. An increased TBARS level and decreased GPx activity, suggestive for OS, were recorded in homogenates on day 14 vs. day 2 of the experiment in the 6-OHDA treated rats. The simultaneous application of LA mitigated these changes. Our study demonstrates that the low dose of LA could be of value for decreasing the OS of the neurotoxic 6-OHDA, supporting the need for further studies of the benefit of LA treatment in PD.
The aim of this study was to investigate the possible association between serum anti-Helicobacter pylori antibodies and anti-sperm antibodies (ASA) in patients with gastroduodenal diseases caused by H. pylori, infertile patients positive for ASA and healthy fertile blood donors as controls. Serum ASA were studied by sperm agglutination tests, sperm immobilization test and ELISA against sperm antigens (ELISAsp). Serum IgG anti-H. pylori antibodies were detected by ELISA (ELISAHp). The tests revealed significantly higher incidence of ASA in patients with gastroduodenal diseases compared to the controls (P < 0.0001). The median levels of both types of antibodies were significantly higher in infertile patients than in patients with upper gastroduodenal diseases in all tests applied (sperm agglutination and immobilization tests P < 0.0001; ELISAsp P D 0.006; ELISAHp, P D 0.0008). Significant linear correlation was found between anti-H. pylori antibodies and ASA detected by sperm immobilization test (r D 0.613, P D 0.05) in the group of patients with gastroduodenal disease, as well as a weak linear correlation was established between anti-H. pylori antibodies and ASA in ELISAsp (r D 0.275, P D 0.0051) in the same group. These results suggest that H. pylori infection may play a role in the induction of ASA.
Most of the women presented with clearly less unfavorable atherogenic risk than men. Two different phenotypes of obese women with at least moderate Findrisc score were revealed, and the level of inflammation seems to be the main discriminant factor. Larger prospective studies are required to elucidate whether those are really two different pathogenically phenotypes or if they belong to the same phenotype's continuum.
Cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) applications in various fields, such as biology, medicine and agriculture, have significantly grown during recent years. Many new types of plasma sources operating at atmospheric pressure in open air were developed. In order to use such plasmas for the treatment of biological systems, plasma properties should fulfil strong requirements. One of the most important is the prevention from heating damage. That is why in many cases, the post-discharge region is used for treatment, but the short living particles in the active discharge zone and reactions with them are missed in that case. We use the active region of surface-wave-sustained argon plasma for biological systems treatment. The previous investigations showed good bactericidal, virucidal, seeds germination and decontamination effects at a short treatment time, but the discharge conditions for bio-medical applications need specific adjustment. A detailed theoretical and experimental investigation of the plasma characteristics and their possible optimization in order to meet the requirements for bio-medical applications are presented in this paper. The length of the plasma torch, the temperature at the treatment sample position and the microwave radiation there are estimated and optimized by the appropriate choice of discharge tube size, argon flow rate and microwave power.
Summary We present a case of 58-year-old female patent with a long-term history of paranoid schizophrenia treated with different antipsychotics. She died with sign and symptoms of hypothermia. Autopsy revealed an ischemic stroke. We could not exclude involvement of antipsychotic medications as culprits.
