The paper refers to threat assessment of dangerous goods (DG) in transportation of the European Union and the Republic of Poland. Dangerous goods in the European Union are carried by inland waterways, rail and road. In Poland 87.5% of DG have been carried by road and 12.5% by rail in 2014. DG can cause an accident and lead to fires, explosions and chemical poisoning or burning with considerable harm to people and the environment. There is not monitoring system in Poland to control in real time road transportation of dangerous goods. Proposition of National System of Monitoring Dangerous Goods in Poland was presented. Realization of mentioned kind of system may significantly contribute to improving safety of people and environment.
Paper presents the most important aspects of safety in the transport of dangerous goods in Poland and the EU. The problems regarding procedures and potential threats of mentioned transport were presented. Furthermore statistical data on dangerous goods in Poland and the EU were stressed.. Finally the recommendations aimed at improving the safety of the described problem.

The article describes the results of own research related to the transport of dangerous goods. Finally, the structure of the road transport safety system for dangerous goods was proposed, which will reduce the risk of dangerous incidents and improve the operation of emergency services.

The article discusses problems related to road transport infrastructure in the Eastern Poland, including the following provinces: Podlasie, the eastern part of Mazovia, Lublin and Podkarpackie, on the example of the S19 ex-pressway running through these provinces, popularly referred to as the “Via Carpathia” route. The arguments are presented that the road infrastructure built on the S19 route is a key factor in the security and economic devel-opment of Eastern Poland, as well as an important element of economic, social and military security of our entire country.
