Few studies have been conducted on music students' psychological well-being and happiness. The purpose was to assess the psychological well-being, happiness and educational satisfaction among a group of university music students. Students participated voluntarily and filled out a sociodemographic questionnaire, Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-21), Oxford Happiness Questionnaire (OHQ) and a questionnaire for educational satisfaction. Participation rate was 92.0%. Participants had mild depression, moderate anxiety and mild stress. Educational satisfaction was not related to students' academic achievement. First and second year students and female participants were more satisfied with their education. Significant relationships were found between psychological well-being, happiness and educational satisfaction. Depression, stress and anxiety had a negative impact on happiness. Putting curricula of health promotion and prevention into practice at music departments could be a good starting point to diminish both physical and psychological injuries among students and artists.
The success of an educational institution is heavily based on instructors’ occupational satisfaction and their happiness at their workplace. Therefore, determining the case of the instructors’ wellbeing in order to improve working standards is really important to sustain high quality in education. In this sense, this study set out to identify state of academicians in terms of their level of burnout, vigor and occupational satisfaction at a department of Fine Arts Education at Uludag University. All 42 academician participants attended the study. To determine the level of burnout and vigor, Shirom-Melamed Burnout Measure was employed, and to learn participants’ occupational satisfaction levels, a questionnaire developed by authors was used. The results show that burnout and vigor have negative correlation and occupational satisfaction has negatively correlated with emotional exhaustion, which is a sub-dimension of burnout but positively correlated with physical strength, which is a sub-dimension of vigor. Moreover, it is determined that the academicians who go to the doctor less frequently have higher occupational satisfaction and the academicians who are facing health issues have higher level of burnout. The results confirm that health status significantly affects one sub-dimension of burnout, which is physical fatigue.
The success of an educational institution is largely based on student motivation and educational satisfaction and their happiness at their place of education. It is therefore very important to maintain high quality in education to determine the case of students' well-being in order to improve the standards of study. In this regard, the aim of this study was to identify the status of students in terms of their level of burnout, vigor and educational satisfaction at the Department of Fine Arts Education. There were 250 students participated in the study. To determine the level of burnout and vigor, Shirom Melamed Burnout and Vigor Measures were employed, and to measure the educational satisfaction levels, educational satisfaction questionnaire was used. The results show that music majors have lower vigor than art majors. Gender does not have significant effect on any of the scores. Burnout, vigor and educational satisfaction differ according to the year of education for music major, but only vigor differs for art majors. Mother’s education level has significant effect on burnout and vigor for music majors and on education satisfaction for art majors. GPA is not correlated with none of burnout, vigor or educational satisfaction.
STEAM is an interdisciplinary educational approach. Based on the idea that different disciplines can meet on a common ground, the STEAM approach aims to give students the habit of working together, to provide rich learning experiences and to focus on real-world problems. This study investigates STEAM-based digital learning applications used in music education, their contents and age group suitability. For this purpose, the method of the research is the narrative review study. In this context, we analyzed the Chrome Music Lab, Scratch Music, Groove Pizza, earSketch, UPISketch and iMuSciCA applications. Studies have proved that digital-based STEAM applications used in music education increase students’ creativity, improve their music learning, and increase their interest in the lesson because they offer fun learning. With the development of technology, it has become necessary to adapt the methods and techniques used in music education to the age. By integrating art education, which has an important place in STEAM education, with other disciplines, music lessons can be effective and more permanent. The study shows that the more effective use of related applications by music teachers will contribute to music education and it is important in this regard.
