During a 1-hr. vigilance session Ss were required to detect specified digit triads in an uninterrupted random digit series. EEG was recorded continuously with sampled epochs analyzed by computer for autocorrelation and period analysis. Correlogram ratios indicated progressively decreasing arousal through the session but did not distinguish responses from detection failures. Incidence of alpha waves by period analysis also did not identify errors, but incidence of theta waves dropped significantly just prior to failures and did not do so around responses.
This new text closes the gap between graduate study of psychology and the attainment of professional know-how. It is a systematic compilation of information that is important to professional psychologists, but neglected in their training. It covers facts and techniques otherwise learned only by long experience. Particular attention is given to problems of publishing with special reference to the Held of psychology. The text assembles information from other professional fields, includes new research never before reported, and contains valuable reference material which makes the book useful as a handbook.
Does a five-fold increase i n catalog listings in 28 years equal double-digit psychology course title inflation?Psychology departments engaged in curriculum planning, revision, or retrenchment often seek information about course offerings in comparable institutions. Sanford and Fleishman (1950) presented useful data from college catalogs of 1947-48 and Daniel, Dunham and Morris (1965) published comparable information for the 1961-62 year, Kulik (1973) gives updated percentages for 1969 for the same courses identified in the Daniel et al. study, but his analysis does not reveal replacements of titles among the most frequent offerings. We have continued the series of surveys by tabulating titles of courses listed by psychology departments in recent catalogs. Because institutions of higher education have undergone great changes in the span of 28 years since the Sanford and Fleishman study, we were unable to replicate previous reports precisely. The first study included eight types of institutions (
One of the most important indications of the viability of a professional field is formal, published articles in a topical journal. As a new field emerges, its literature begins to appear in a variety of journals, making access somewhat difficult. Once a topical journal is established, particularly if that journal is owned by a recognized professional association, then there is a clearly defined focal point with which members identify and through which they communicate and achieve greater cohesion. Therefore, the initiation and development of Division 2's journal, Teaching of Psychology (TOP), is a significant part of the first 100 years of organized psychology in the United States. GERMINAL PERIODThe journal was preceded by 59 issues of the Teaching of Psychology Newsletter, which was published over a 24-year period, an uncommonly long gestation, even for a journal. The first issue of the newsletter was distributed in November 1950. Although it had no series number, the front-TOP HISTORY 433
In this study subjects learned a blind stylus maze in which the only cues were kinesthetic. Activity in terms of action-potential levels was sampled from the dorsal surface of the forearms and lower legs, at the area of greatest enlargement, during each of 10 trials and during each rest period between trials. As learning progressed a decrease was found in the tensional level, followed by an increase lasting up to the point where practice was discontinued. Decreasing tension is associated with the elimination of errors and the development of a particular co-ordination. Increasing tension is associated with increased speed of performance and the more efficient use of the co-ordination. Differential tensional patterns appear to persist in direct relation to the distance of the part measured from the performing member. It is suggested that the patterns found are influenced by gradients and postural factors.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
