This systematic review analyzes the evidence of the effects of physical activity governmental programs oriented toward the health of independent older adults. Medline, Web of Science, PsycINFO, and Psychology & Behavioral Sciences Collection databases were used for data mining, and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Protocols recommendations were followed. Five studies (n = 2,545 participants) fulfilled the established inclusion criteria. The physical activity programs had beneficial effects on the older adults' quality of life, fall risk, activities of daily living, physical activity levels, nutritional risk, body mass index, arterial pressure, resting heart rate, blood glucose, triglycerides, and/or cholesterol, but did not significantly alter their body fat mass percentage. Programs involving diverse physical capacities seem to be more effective for healthy aging. It is recommended that governments start to disseminate the outcomes of these programs within society and the scientific community.
<p><span lang="EN-US">This article makes an analysis of the pedagogical teaching practices used and developed by Chilean physical education teachers during the coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) pandemic periods. The virus from China spread around the world, changed our daily lives and as such, at the same time impacted the educational system in a matter of weeks. Confinement led educational systems to eliminate face-to-face and use virtual teaching in order to continue with the teaching-learning processes, including the physical education discipline. From the methodological point of view, the study is installed in the interpretive-qualitative perspective, in such a way that 14 semi-structured interviews were carried by physical education teachers from the Maule-Chile region, via team, Zoom, Skype, because of the pandemic, face-to-face contact was impossible. The result of the study shows the impact on the quality of life of teachers and students because of the confinement. The pedagogical reconfiguration that teachers experienced in a matter of days, led them to use different virtual platforms to continue connected with their students, in order to deploy the learning objectives defined by the Chilean Ministry of Education. However, the foregoing shows the scarce possibility of verifying student learning, due to the difficulties of monitoring and feedback.</span></p>
El presente artículo tiene como objetivo comprender el significado del periodo formativo práctica profesional, que vivenciaron estudiantes de la carrera de pedagogía en Educación Física de dos universidades regionales ubicadas en la región del Maule, Chile, durante la pandemia Covid-19 en el primer semestre del año 2020. Desde el punto de vista metodológico, el estudio se instala en la perspectiva interpretativa-cualitativa, de tal manera que se realizaron tres grupos focales y seis entrevistas en profundidad a un total de 34 estudiantes en proceso de práctica profesional. Las entrevistas grupales e individuales se realizaron vía Zoom producto de las restricciones de la autoridad sanitaria. Los resultados dan cuenta de un escaso contacto con los estudiantes de los establecimientos educacionales, utilización de redes sociales como estrategias de enseñanza, y un impacto negativo en los niveles motivacionales producto de la enseñanza virtual, cuestiones que emergen a partir de los procesos reflexivos y de autoaprendizaje de los estudiantes en formación. Estas reflexiones, se sugiere sean consideradas en los procesos de formación inicial, en consideración a la relevancia de la práctica profesional en la construcción del ethos docente, por parte de futuros profesores de Educación Física. Abstract. This article aims at understanding the meaning of the professional curricular internship period experienced by physical education trainees of two regional universities located in the Maule Region, Chile, during the Covid-19 pandemic in the first semester 2020. From the methodological standpoint, the study takes an interpretive-qualitative stance, hence three focus groups were organized and six in-depth interviews were conducted totalling 34 students in the process of professional curricular internship. The group and individual interviews were carried out via Zoom due to the health authority restrictions. The results show scarce contact with the students in the educational establishments, scarce use of social networks as teaching strategies, and a negative impact on motivational levels resulting from virtual teaching. The aforementioned issues emerge from the reflective processes and self-learning of the trainees. This study suggests pondering these reflections in the initial teaching training processes taking into account the relevance of the professional curricular internship in the construction of the teaching ethos of future Physical Education teachers.
The objective was to analyze anthropometric and physical performance variables as a function of chronological age and biological maturity in young Chilean tennis players. The study was observational, cross-sectional, with descriptive and analytical characteristics. Eighty-seven tennis players were evaluated (58 men 15.1 ± 0.8 years and 29 women, 15.3 ± 0.8 years). The measured anthropometric variables were a sprint test of 20m; a modified agility test; a sit-and-reach test and shoulder flexibility; manual grip strength; horizontal jump in feet; a medicine ball throw; a countermovement vertical jump; an abalakov vertical jump and a 20-m shuttle-run test. The growth velocity acceleration peak (APHV), skeletal muscle mass and fat mass were calculated, R2 and standard error of estimate (SEE) were examined. The results show that chronological age explained the anthropometric variables between 1 and 23% in men and 1 and 29% in women; by biological age, variables were explained between 3 and 53% in men and 2 and 42% in women. Of the physical performance variables, chronological age described between 2 and 24% of them in men and 1 and 29% in women; the same were explained by biological age between 1 and 19% in men and 1 and 26% in women. We conclude that anthropometric variables showed a better relationship with biological age, except for volume of fat tissue, while physical performance variables showed low association with both biological and chronological age.
In tennis, it is common for young male tennis players to spend several weeks away from their local training camps during the competition season, which could affect their performance. The purpose of the study was to analyze the effects of a six-week international tour on physical performance and body composition in young Chilean tennis players. Twenty-four men between the ages of 14 and 16 participated in this research. In body composition and anthropometric measurement, body weight, height, skinfolds, and perimeters were measured. Body fat percentage (BFP) and skeletal muscle mass (SMM) were calculated. For physical performance, 5-m and 10-m sprints, modified agility test (MAT test), countermovement jump (CMJ), and medicine ball throw (MBT) were evaluated. Results show that, in body composition, BFP and SMM significantly decreased post-tour (p < 0.05; effect sizes ranging from 0.23 to 0.33, respectively). In physical performance, agility and 5-m and 10-m sprints significantly decreased (p < 0.05, effect sizes ranging from −0.63 to 1.10). We conclude that after a six-week international tour, BFP, SMM, agility, and speed (linear sprint) tend to decrease significantly, with a greater effect in the sprint tests.
