Forensic dentistry, a branch of the forensic sciences, plays an important role within postmortem human identification, especially in cases of corpses that are charred, skeletonized or in an advanced state of decomposition. Identification of human remains via dental knowledge is done using a comparative technique, which is simple, inexpensive and reliable, the aim of which is to compare dental records and information recorded by dentists in clinical appointments made before an individual's death, with postmortem dental records obtained via forensic examination. In this context, the present study aims to demonstrate the importance of dental records and the effectiveness of forensic dentistry in human identification, illustrated by the report of a case that was conducted at the São Luis Coroner's Office in the Brazilian state of Maranhão. It may be concluded that dental records maintained by a dentist, when complete, properly structured and correctly archived, retain important personal information and are fundamental tools in the process of human identification.
The Diagnose Sexuelle Probabiliste v.2 (DSP2) is an accurate tool used for estimating the sex of an individual through the os coxae. The goal of this study was to verify the applicability of the DSP2 tool in a skeletal sample from Northeastern Brazil and to attest for its precision, accuracy, and reliability. The sample was composed of 301 os coxae from the Center for Studies in Forensic Anthropology of the College of Odontology from the University of Pernambuco, in Pernambuco, Brazil. The results reveal that it was possible to correctly estimate the sex of 83.7% of the total sample. The error rate was 0.4%, and the percentage of undetermined individuals varied according to the combination of measurements used. The results demonstrated a high index of accuracy and a low error rate, indicating that DSP2 is a reliable tool for sex estimation applied to this studied Brazilian population.
Introduction: In the practice of dentistry, the dentist may be held responsible for their actions or omissions that result in damage to their patients. Such responsibility may occur in the ethical, civil and criminal spheres, among others. Over the years, the society and the professional-patient relationship have changed supported by current legislations, as well as increased information and communication. So, we have witnessed an increasing number of disputes in court involving dentists and theirs patients, which reveals the importance of professionals to know the regulations in the practice of dentistry and the consequences of the illegal act. Objective: The present study aimed to provide knowledge, through a literature review, on the legal aspect of professional responsibility of the dental surgeon and to highlight the importance of dental documentation as a means of proving professional performance. Methods: It was used books, theses and scientific papers published in electronic databases such as SciELO, Bireme, MedLine and Lilacs, in Portuguese language, besides laws and regulations published in official electronic addresses. Conclusions: It was concluded that an adequate medical record protects the professional; as documentation fails, compromises all work done and may result in condemnation.
