International students, often a noteworthy group, constitute about 10 per cent of the student population on many campuses throughout the world (OECD, 2009). At any time, there are likely to be over a million students and scholars attending institutions of higher learning abroad, and recent estimates have set the figure at about 4.5 million (Çetinsaya, G.2014). A significant portion of the contemporary literature has dealt with the problems of international students. Owing to the importance of international students to culturally diverse blend of colleges and universities, higher education institutions must develop support services to assist international students with a series of special needs ranging from adjusting to the academic requirements, to dealing with cultural factors of being drown in new community settings (Cho & Yu, 2015). Leisure, in the meanwhile, is an important experience for university students since it is a functional tool to create socially accommodating environments for this population. However, how active leisure participation impact on social adjustment has not been studied extensively in qualitative studies. Therefore, this qualitative study intended to examine the benefits and impacts of active leisure participation on social adjustment of international students in a mid-size metropolitan university in Manisa, Turkey. Overall, students demonstrated gains in social adjustment and reported psychological and physical benefits when they actively participated in leisure time activities. Study showed that international students have demands and expectations from the university in terms of leisure time activities.
The purpose of this study is to determine the overweight and obesity prevalence among students studying in primary school by ages and to reveal the relation with physical activity. 1946 students aged between 7 and 11 and receiving primary education in a district of Manisa province have participated in this study. There are 885 female students and 1061 male students. Height measurements, body composition measurements, vertical jump test and 30mt tests of the participants were performed respectively. SPSS 22 program was used for statistical analysis. Frequency distributions and percentage values were presented in statistical notations. Pearson correlation analysis was performed in data analysis. In conclusion, it is observed that 12% of female students are overweight, 9.5% are obese and 21.5% are both overweight and obese. 8.8% of male students are overweight, 11.3% are obese and 20.1% are both overweight and obese. There is also a statistically correlation between obesity and age and parameters of physical fitness. In order to reduce the prevalence of overweight and obesity in children, school and community-based programs must be planned to encourage children to do physical activity and exercise and to prefer low calorie intake. The content and importance of these programs should be made applicable by parents and local governments.
This study aims to determine the role of youth camp practices, organised by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, in the development of self-awareness and leadership skills of female students participating in youth camps. As a result of analysis of the data collected with triangulation method -observation, focus group discussions and document analysis-, common ten (10) kernel categories were obtained. These themes are prejudice, communication, friendships, acculturation, team work, responsibility, self-confidence, consciousness, volunteering and taking role model. Finally, it is determined that youth camp practices contribute in the development of self-awareness and leadership skills in female students according to “obtained kernel themes”.
IntroductionCommunication has traditionally been considered one of the most crucial factors allowing individual to adapt himself to his environment because his social point of view and satisfaction with him in his social environment could mostly be directly related to his communication skills. Moreover, it is undeniable that effective and proper communication is the major step almost every relationship in all societies (Greennockle, 2010). On the contrary, miscommunication and incapability to express himself properly or being In Recent studies underline the fact that adolescents are, at many times, likely to experience serious communication problems with their families and close environments. So, the aim of this study is to determine positive impact of sport-related games, which are performed as extracurricular activities, on high school students' communication skills. In the study, pre, & post-tests was utilized with the control group's experimental patterns. Two participant groups were made up of totally 30 high school students, 15 of whom would be in the experimental group and the rest of whom were in the control group. The former group was given sport-related 20 applications for 10 weeks during which the latter group would not deal with any extracurricular activities. Meanwhile, before and after the applications, data was collected by means of "The Communication Skills Scale" which was developed by Korkut (1996) and then analysed through "two-way ANCOVA" test techniques. Results clarify that the considerable gap in scores of the students' pre, & post-tests perception concerning their communication skills are clearly attributed to sport-related games and it was also established that scores of the students in the experimental group were meaningfully higher than ones in the control group. However, perception of communication skills in the both groups was not significantly different by sex of the students. Moreover, the common effect of sex and participation on sport-related games was not found statistically meaningful in terms of communication skills.
