An unsteady Navier-Stokes solution system for aeromechanical analysis of multiple blade row configurations is presented. A distinctive feature of the solver is that unified numerical methods and boundary condition treatments are consistently used for both a nonlinear time-domain solution mode and a frequency-domain one. This not only enables a wider range of physical aeromechanical problems to be tackled, but also provides a consistent basis for validating different computational models, identifying and understanding their relative merits and adequate working ranges. An emphasis of the present work is on a highly efficient frequency-domain method for multi-row aeromechanic analysis. With a new interface treatment, propagations and reflections of pressure waves between adjacent blade rows are modeled within a domain consisting of only a single passage in each blade row. The computational model and methods are firstly described. Then, extensive validations of the frequency-domain method against both experimental data and the nonlinear time-domain solutions are described. Finally the computational analysis and demonstration of the intra-row reflection effects on the rotor aerodynamic damping are presented.
In this study, calculation of the performance of an axial compressor from a twin-shaft industrial gas turbine (IGT) is carried out through a semi-empirical modelling framework. The modelling framework considers a flow analysis represented through theoretical air velocity diagrams in the multi-stage axial compressor. Design parameters, such as blade angle and annulus geometry across the different stages comprising the multi-stage axial compressor, are considered for the development of the modelling framework. Stagewise data generated through a High-Fidelity Design Tool (HFDT) during compressor simulation are considered for the validation of the modelling framework. The data comprise flow rate, rotational speed, inlet guide vane (IGV) position, variable stator guide vanes (VGVs) position, temperature, and pressure ratio across the different stages. The results demonstrate that it is possible for the developed modelling framework to predict the increase of pressure and temperature across the different stages of the compressor in a way similar to HFDT. Capability of the modelling framework to predict the effect of IGV position outside its nominal schedule on stage compressor performance is demonstrated through the construction of an overall compressor map and individual stage characteristic maps. In addition, the effect of a hypothetical VGV mechanism malfunction situation on stagewise pressure ratio is predicted. The effect of fouling which impacts the turning of the air passing through the blades in the axial compressor that lead to compressor performance deterioration is also predicted. This study couples the fundamental principles of axial compressors and a semiempirical modelling to include more physics into the low fidelity modelling framework.

Typical turbomachinery aerothermal problems of practical interest are characterized by flow structures of wide-ranging scales, which interact with each other. Such multiscale interactions can be observed between the flow structures produced by surface roughness and by the bulk flow patterns. Moreover, additive manufacturing (AM) may sooner or later open a new chapter in the way components are designed by granting designers the ability to control the shape and patterns of surface roughness. As a result, surface finish, which so far has been treated largely as a stochastic trait, can be shifted to a set of design parameters that consist of repetitive, discrete micro-elements on a wall surface (“manufacturable roughness”). Considering this prospective capability, the question would arise regarding how surface microstructures can be incorporated in computational analyses during designing in the future. Semi-empirical methods for predicting aerothermal characteristics and the impact of manufacturable roughness could be used to minimize computational cost. However, the lack of element-to-element resolution may lead to erroneous predictions, as the interactions among the roughness micro-elements have been shown to be significant for adequate performance predictions (Kapsis and He, 2018, “Analysis of Aerothermal Characteristics of Surface Micro-Structures,” ASME J. Fluids Eng., 140(5), p. 051104). In this paper, a new multiscale approach based on the novel block spectral method (BSM) is adopted. This method aims to provide efficient resolution of the detailed local flow variation in space and time of the large-scale microstructures. This resolution is provided without resorting to modeling every single ones in detail, as a conventional large-scale computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation would demand, but still demonstrating similar time-accurate and time-averaged flow properties. The main emphasis of this work is to develop a parallelized solver of the method to enable tackling large problems. The work also includes a first of the kind verification and demonstration of the method for wall surfaces with a large number of microstructured elements.
In this study, the inter-stage dynamic performance of a multistage axial compressor is simulated through a semi-empirical model constructed in the Matlab Simulink environment. A semi-empirical 1-D compressor model developed in a previous study has been integrated with a 0-D twin-shaft gas turbine model developed in the Simulink environment. Inter-stage performance data generated through a high-fidelity design tool and based on throughflow analysis are considered for the development of the inter-stage modeling framework. Inter-stage performance data comprise pressure ratio at various speeds with nominal variable stator guide vane (VGV) positions and with hypothetical offsets to them with respect to the gas generator speed (GGS). Compressor discharge pressure, fuel flow demand, GGS and power turbine speed measured during the operation of a twin-shaft industrial gas turbine are considered for the dynamic model validation. The dynamic performance of the axial-compressor, simulated by the developed modeling framework, is represented on the overall compressor map and individual stage characteristic maps. The effect of extracting air through the bleed port in the engine center-casing on transient performance represented on overall compressor map and stage performance maps is also presented. In addition, the dynamic performance of the axial-compressor with an offset in VGV position is represented on the overall compressor map and individual stage characteristic maps. The study couples the fundamental principles of axial compressors and a semi-empirical modeling architecture in a complementary manner. The developed modeling framework can provide a deeper understanding of the factors that affect the dynamic performance of axial compressors.
