The conventional method of estimating parasite densities employs an assumption of 8000 white blood cells (WBCs)/µl. However, due to leucopenia in malaria patients, this number appears to overestimate parasite densities. In this study, we assessed the accuracy of parasite density estimated using this assumed WBC count in eastern Myanmar, where Plasmodium vivax has become increasingly prevalent. From 256 patients with uncomplicated P. vivax malaria, we estimated parasite density and counted WBCs by using an automated blood cell counter. It was found that WBC counts were not significantly different between patients of different gender, axillary temperature, and body mass index levels, whereas they were significantly different between age groups of patients and the time points of measurement. The median parasite densities calculated with the actual WBC counts (1,903/µl) and the assumed WBC count of 8,000/µl (2,570/µl) were significantly different. We demonstrated that using the assumed WBC count of 8000 cells/µl to estimate parasite densities of P. vivax malaria patients in this area would lead to an overestimation. For P. vivax patients aged five years and older, an assumed WBC count of 5,500/µl best estimated parasite densities. This study provides more realistic assumed WBC counts for estimating parasite densities in P. vivax patients from low-endemicity areas of Southeast Asia.
Diabetes cardiomyopathy has metabolic disorder and abnormality of cardiomyocytes, which is closely related to autophagy or apoptosis of cardiomyocytes. Scutellarin (SCU) is an important monomer extracted from Erigeron breviscapus (vant.) Hand.-Mazz. This study was conducted to investigate the function of SCU on apoptosis and autophagy of myocardial cells. We established a model of type 2 diabetic cardiomyopathy by high-fat and high-sugar diet. The results indicated that SCU downregulated blood glucose, total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) levels and upregulated high-density lipoprotein (HDL) level. In addition, SCU downregulated lactic dehydrogenase 1 (LDH1) and creatine kinase (CK) levels. Meanwhile, SCU improved the myocardium morphology and reduced myocardial apoptosis. Furthermore, SCU promoted the mRNA and protein expression of autophagy-related factors (Beclin-1 and LC3-II) and inhibited the mRNA and protein expression of apoptosis-related factors (caspase-3, caspase-8, caspase-9, caspase-12, Bax, and Cyt-C). In conclusion, SCU can promote autophagy signal pathway by upregulating the autophagy-related factors and inhibit the apoptotic signal pathway by downregulating apoptosis-related factors, thereby relieving type 2 diabetic cardiomyopathy (T2DC).
Topological indices are a vital tool in QSAR/QSPR study, and Randić index and Zagreb index are mostly historical and well‐known indices which have been widely used to predict the properties of compounds. In recent years, to meet the demands from various engineering applications, some variants of Randić index and Zagreb index are defined and investigated. In this work, we determine the redefined Zagreb indices, forgotten index, reduced reciprocal Randić index and reduced second Zagreb index for random polyphenyl chain and random spiro chain which are produced by zeroth‐order Markov process and frequently appears in the field of materials and pharmacology. Furthermore, the average values and special settings in p1 or p2 to be zero are discussed.
Aiming at the navigation congestion of water conservancy projects, the shipowner’s psychological mechanism and behavior evolution are embedded into the dynamic model, which explores the evolution law using empirical data. The structural equation model (SEM) was constructed based on four variables: Shipowner personality, waiting time perception, congestion charging experience and anchorage environmental facilities (AEF). Taking the Three Gorges Project as an example, the influence relationship and degree are empirically tested. Then the dynamic evolution process was simulated by using the system dynamics (SD). The results suggest that the waiting time perception and congestion charge can weaken the shipowner’s intention, while the anchorage environment facilities can enhance the intention. The different personality characteristics will bring different effects, and the waiting time perception is the key intermediary. The psychological cost determines the dynamic evolution. Adjusting the factor can help the ship transfer between the navigable building and turning over the dam, realizing the balanced “double-channel” and alleviating navigation congestion.
The problem of mobile phone dependence is becoming more and more serious. Therefore, it is very important to explore the causes of mobile phone dependence and its psychological mechanism. One of the important characteristics of mobile phone dependence is the loss of control, which shows that self-control is an important factor affecting mobile phone dependence. Self-continuity is closely related to cell phone dependence. Mobile phone addicts usually use mobile phones to temporarily relieve the pressure and negative emotions, but it will lead to more pressure and negative emotions in the future. In order to examine the situation of college students’ future self-continuity, self-control and mobile phone addiction as well as their relationships, especially mediating effect of self-control, a total of 482 college students were assessed with Future Self-Continuity Scale (FSC), Self-Control Scale (SCS), and Mobile Phone Dependency Index (MPAI). The results showed that: (1) The future self-continuity, self-control and mobile phone dependence of the college students in this study were all at a medium level, and there was no significant difference in demographic variables (such as gender, grade, etc.); (2) Both future self-continuity and self-control were negatively correlated with mobile phone dependence; (3) There was a significant positive correlation between future self-continuity and self-control; (4) Self-control played a partial mediating role between future self-continuity and mobile phone dependence. Therefore, improving self-continuity and self-control can be an effective way to intervene mobile phone dependence. In addition research implication, limitations and future directions were discussed.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
