The aim of this study is at examining how well the students’ ability in mastering the text and the main idea, and how they could improve their ability in understanding the text especially to find out the main idea from the text. The object of this study was 10 students from semester I in Intensive Reading Comprehension class. The data was obtained from the result of students’ worksheets and questionnaires distribution. In finding out the result, The data was analyzed by using descriptive qualitative. The result shows that the students’ ability in mastering reading text was categorized in poor level of understanding main idea. Besides, the result of questionnaire indicated that the main problem in reading lesson is that the methods used and the class situation. Therefore, the students do self motivation to enrich and memorize new vocabularies as an effort in improving their reading understanding. The implication of this study is to give the input to the lecturer of Reading subject to apply the appropriate method and technique, and create a nice class environtment.
Reading is not just as a simply reading but it requires a good understanding to get the meaning of the written text. Some students yet face difficulty in receiving the meaning of the text. So, the aim of this study is to analyze the difficulties faced by the English Department students in mastering reading text, especially about finding and understanding the main idea. It also studies how the students deal with their difficulties in Intensive Reading Comprehension class. To reach the goal, 10 students were taken randomly as the participants. Question sheets were distributed to the participants and also supported with interview. They helped the writer in collecting the data about the students’ difficulties. From the gaining data, it is found that most students had problem in mastering reading text especially in understanding main idea that caused by lacking of vocabulary mastery. To deal with this problem, the students tried some ways by practicing reading aloud, having group learning, and asking the lecturer to use the appropriate technique in teaching learning reading comprehension.
This study was aimed at improving vocabulary mastery through games. It is to see whether game can improve students’ vocabulary mastery and to know the effectiveness of using game in teaching class. The participants of this study were 10 students and one English lecturer at University of Muhammadiyah Aceh. The data were obtained from questionnaires that distributed to students and interview one lecturer to add more information. In analyzing the data, this study applied the qualitative descriptive method. The result of this study reveals that the implementation of game in teaching learning process is effective in which it encourages students’ motivation and involvement during the learning process. Indeed, it becomes the relevant way for lecturer to improve students’ vocabulary mastery.
This study aimed to find out about the students’ perceptions of the use of Grammarly in checking grammar in written assignments and the students’ obstacles when using Grammarly. This quantitative study used questionnaire to collect the data. The participants of the study were ten students from semester sixth of the English Department at a private university in Banda Aceh, Indonesia. The results of the study showed that many students gave positive responses toward using Grammarly to learn and check their grammar in assignments. In addition, the study found that the students’ obstacles when using Grammarly included some issues such as problems in the internet connection and lack of understanding of Grammarly suggestions. The study suggests that Grammarly to be applied for grammar checking among EFL students.
This research aimed at investigating; 1) what methods were applied by lecturers in teaching speaking; and 2) how were the methods applied in the classroom. This study employed qualitative research and was descriptive in nature. The respondent of this study were two English lecturers who taught speaking subject at the University of Muhammadiyah Aceh. In collecting the data, the researcher used two kinds of instrument; observation and interview. The data were analyzed using Miles and Huberman technique which proposed three simultaneous flows of action: a) data reduction; b) data display; and c) verification/conclusion. The result shows that; 1) the most of the methods applied in teaching speaking were communicative language teaching and direct method; and 2) the implementing method in teaching speaking consisted of material presentation by the lecturer and classroom discussion.
