To curb the spread of COVID-19, many governments around the world have implemented tiered lockdowns with varying degrees of stringency. Lockdown levels are typically increased when the disease spreads and reduced when the disease abates. A predictive control approach is used to develop optimized lockdown strategies for curbing the spread of COVID-19. The strategies are then applied to South African data. The South African case is of interest as the South African government has defined five distinct levels of lockdown, which serves as a discrete control input. An epidemiological model for the spread of COVID-19 in South Africa was previously developed, and is used in conjunction with a hybrid model predictive controller to optimize lockdown management under different policy scenarios. Scenarios considered include how to flatten the curve to a level that the healthcare system can cope with, how to balance lives and livelihoods, and what impact the compliance of the population to the lockdown measures has on the spread of COVID-19. The main purpose of this article is to show what the optimal lockdown level should be given the policy that is in place, as determined by the closed-loop feedback controller.
A hybrid non-linear model predictive controller (HNMPC) is developed for a run-of-mine ore grinding mill circuit. A continuous-time grinding mill circuit model is presented with a hydrocyclone cluster as the primary classifier. The discrete-time component is the switching of hydrocyclones in the hydrocyclone cluster. The resulting model is a hybrid non-linear model with both continuous and discrete dynamics. A simulation of the HNMPC shows the advantages of using the hydrocyclone cluster as an additional manipulated variable. The advantages of the HNMPC is illustrated by comparing its performance to a non-linear MPC where no switching of hydrocyclones is possible. The genetic algorithm based HNMPC showed increased controller stability in its ability to incorporate discrete dynamics into the controller directly. The methods discussed in this paper can be used to incorporate different types of discrete dynamics into advanced grinding mill circuit controllers due to the modular presentation of the model and HNMPC controller design.
PIH occurs commonly in generalised epilepsy, mostly as migraine headache, with interictal headache a specific risk factor. PIH is underdiagnosed and undertreated, leading to self-medication. Optimal management should be elucidated in future studies.
Earthworms are bioindicators of soil pollution. The ecotoxicity of tailings from selected gold mines in South Africa was investigated utilizing Eisenia andrei bioassays and biomarkers. Samples were obtained from unrehabilitated, rehabilitated and naturally vegetated sites. Biomass, neutral red retention time (NRRT), survival and reproduction were assessed using standardized protocols. Earthworm biomass, NRRT and reproductive success in rehabilitated tailings (comparable to naturally vegetated site) were significantly higher (p < 0.05) than in unrehabilitated tailings. In addition, significantly lower (p < 0.05) body tissue concentrations of As, Cd, Co, Cu and Ni contents were found in the rehabilitated tailings compared to the unrehabilitated. Further, significantly lower (p < 0.05) soil Mn and Zn concentrations were obtained in unrehabilitated tailings than the rehabilitated and naturally vegetated sites. Overall, reduced ecotoxicity effects were confirmed in rehabilitated compared to unrehabilitated tailings. This suggests that rehabilitation as a post-mining restorative strategy has strong positive influence on mine tailings.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
