There have been many studies1,2,3,4,5,6) concerning the relation between size of arm cuff and blood pressure reading by cuff method, and several authorities e.g. WHO Expert Committee on Cardiovascular Diseases and Hypertension7), the American Heart Association8) and Cardiac Society of Great Britain and Irelands) have recommended various standards of cuff size. But yet neither the last word has been heard, nor the exact reasons for their choice have been given. In Japan, we have two different standards of cuff size: viz. Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) and the Recommendation of Research Unit on Control of Hypertension and Cardiovascular Diseases by Grant of Japanese Ministry of Health and Welfare. But there is no experimental verification that any of these standards is adequate for the average Japanese adult. Moreover, as arm size has great influences upon the accuracy of the auscultatory blood pressure measurement 10) , it is worthwhile to study the relation between cuff size and blood pressure reading on Japanese adults who have generally smaller arms than Europeans and, if possible, to suggest a new adequate standard size of cuff for Japanese adults. The authors have measured the blood pressure of total 100 Japanese adults using various cuffs which have different sizes both in width and length, and have already published some part of the results in Japanese") elsewhere. In this present paper, results of all experiments on both male and female Japanese adults are summarized and statistically analyzed.
