In this article, the names of Clupea harengus membras will be considered in Estonian, (Salaca) Livonian and Latvian (respectively räim, reńǵand reņģe ‘Baltic herring’). It will be shown that the source of all of these words is the Estonian-Swedish strämg (sträηg), or its preceding word shape *sträimg. The Latvian reņģe is borrowed from Estonian-Swedish through Salaca Livonian. Paul Ariste proposed an adequate etymology for the Estonian räim as early as 1933

The article discusses the origin of the Estonian words kada 'slingshot', (k)raejalad 'horse, trestle' and õnnar 'coccyx'. The word kada is the result of shortening the word kadapulk, which in turn is a folk etymological transformation of katapult 'catapult'. The meaning of 'slingshot' had been obtained by Katapult in German, A?%J?,/"6%)3"6,3?",)53%N0",A&(6,3&,>$3&5%)5:,O?",*($3,J&/2&5"53,Pk)rae-of the compound word (k)raejalad (jalad 'legs') is a borrowing from Middle Low German schrage 'trestle with crossed legs'.
