This study investigated the influence of socio-demographic variables such as age, level of education, belief, and gender on the utilization of ICT among library staff in university libraries in Cross-River and Akwa-Ibom States, Nigeria. To carry out this study, three research objectives that were later translated to hypotheses were generated on the basis of age, gender, level of education, and belief, to guide the research. Literature relating to the variables selected were reviewed to cover both conceptual and empirical sources. The Ex-post facto research design was utilized for the study. A sample of 461 respondents was drawn from six university libraries using the purposive (census) sampling technique. A structured questionnaire titled, ‘Socio-demographic Variables and Utilization of Information and Communication Technology for Library services (SDVUICTLS)’ was used as the main instrument for data collection. The tool was subjected to face and content validation by experts in Test, Measurement and Evaluation Faculty of Education, University of Calabar. The reliability coefficient ranged from 0.75 to .88 and was established through Cronbach’s Alpha method. The hypotheses were tested at .05 alpha levels. The data analysis techniques used were One-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), and independent t-test. The results of data analyses revealed that age (F=8.195), level of education (F = 5.232), belief (F = 4.242), significantly influenced utilization of ICT by library staff in the university libraries, while there was no significant influence of gender t=.252) on the utilization of ICT by library staff for library services. Based on these findings, it was recommended that library management/ parent institutions should embark on aggressive training and retraining of staff especially those that are 40 years and above with special reference to utilization of ICT for provision of services in the libraries. The study equally recommended that Librarians should make personal effort to train themselves with or without the assistance of the management because this will make them to be more relevant and effective in delivering library services to the library users
This paper examined library policy formulation and implementation as well as its implications in relation to school library services in Nigeria. The paper reviewed the concept of library and information science policy and school library services in today's society as one that is required at every step of the way, highlighting that the progress of any nation depends on information generation, dissemination and use which is required early enough at the primary and secondary foundation levels of education. The paper reviewed the present situation of school libraries in the country and found that the school libraries were characterized with poor accommodation, unavailability of trained staff, inadequate relevant materials and apathy on the part of school administrators and government and posited that the situation of school libraries in the country is still unsatisfactory. This paper highlighted the importance of library and information science policy formulation and implementation to achieve a progressive education and development via the provision of access to and the availability of information and knowledge with speed and efficiency to all. The paper takes a position that formulating policy for school library services will lead to a massive infrastructural development in school library development. It will also enhance quality library service delivery and ensures that school libraries are managed by professionals. The paper was concluded with recommendations that government should set up a committee of experts made up of librarians, school managers and publishers to help in policy formulation and implementation for school library development in Nigeria.
This study investigates the awareness and digitization of school libraries in Akwa Ibom State. The main objective of the study was to examine the extent of awareness of librarians on digitization of school library resources in private secondary schools and the software used in digitization and to further examine if the school librarians have the necessary skills for digitization of the library resources in Akwa Ibom State. Out of about 150 private secondary schools in the state, 25 were randomly sampled for the study. This study adopts cognitive flexibility theory. The design for the study was descriptive survey. The data were analysed using percentages and charts. The result of the findings indicated that librarians in Akwa Ibom State school libraries are awareof the digitization technology; but the extent of planning for digitization is low in their libraries. It was noticed that there are inadequate facilities in the libraries for digitization. The study further revealed that the school librarians do not have the skills for the implementation of digitization in the school libraries. Among the recommendations made was that school librarians should be trained and retrained for information skills acquisition.
This study investigated the relationship between information identification skills and the research output of academic librarians in universities in the South-South Geopolitical Zone of Nigeria with a corresponding specific objective, research question, and research hypothesis. To effectively drive the study two theories were adopted. The theory of social-cultural learning for the independent variable (information identification skills), and the theory of self-efficacy for the dependent variable (research output of academic librarians). More so, a conceptual review of literature on information identification skills and research output was carried out and a specific empirical review of the literature with extrinsic similarity and dissimilarity to the study was also done. The study adopted the correlational research design as the research design while the study area was the South-South Geopolitical Zone of Nigeria. The population of the study comprised 252 academic librarians from 14 libraries and faculties. The census technique was used to select the research participants 252. The researcher-developed questionnaire entitled: “Information Identification Skills and the Research Output of Academic Librarians Questionnaire (IISROALQ)” was used to collect data while the reliability test results using the Cronbach Alpha formula in SPSS showed an average coefficient of .83 which signified that the instrument was reliable for the study. Data was collected from the various universities by the researchers and their trained assistants by following the requisite ethical procedures. The data collected was analysed using frequencies and percentages for the research question, while the test of hypothesis at ≤ 0.05 level of significance was carried out with the Chi-Square Test of Independence. The result showed that information identification skills have a positive significant relationship with the research output of academic librarians with p-value = 0.00, and Phi coefficient of 2.49 indicating a very large extent of a positive relationship. In conclusion, it was recommended that the National University commission should make proficient utilization of information literacy skills by academic librarians as part of the requirement to assess their suitability for performance within the scholarly communities. Also, the university management should give attention to constant information literacy skills programs to enhance the literacy skills of the academic staff to be able to produce quality and rich research output.
