Alpha2-adrenoceptor antagonists have been reported to stimulate colonic motor activity, but the effect on colonic motor dysfunction is unclear. We have investigated the effect of alpha 2-adrenoceptor antagonists on wrap-restraint stress-stimulated and normal colonic propulsion in rats. Colonic propulsion was evaluated by the transit of a charcoal marker along the colon. Faecal pellets output was also measured. A 30-min exposure to wrap-restraint stress starting 120 min after infusion of the charcoal marker significantly stimulated colonic transit with a concomitant increase in faecal pellets. Yohimbine and idazoxan, alpha 2-adrenoceptor antagonists, clonidine, an alpha 2-adrenoceptor agonist, and atropine suppressed wrap-restraint stress-stimulated colonic transit and faecal excretion in a dose-dependent manner. Ondansetron and YM060, 5-hydroxytryptamine3 (5-HT3) receptor antagonists, potently inhibited wrap-restraint stress-stimulated colonic transit, but only weakly inhibited faecal excretion. Neither alpha 2-adrenoceptor antagonists nor atropine had any significant effect on normal colonic transit, whereas clonidine and the 5-HT3 receptor antagonists inhibited it. alpha 2-Adrenoceptor antagonists as well as clonidine, atropine and 5-HT3 receptor antagonists inhibit the stress-induced colonic motor dysfunction in rats.
The morphology of dorsal lingual papillae of the Bactrian camel (Camelus bactrianus) was studied by using light and scanning electron microscopy. Filiform and lenticular papillae were considered as mechanical papillae but fungiform and vallate papillae were considered as gustatory papillae. Filiform papillae were distributed mostly in the anterior two-thirds region of the tongue. Each filiform papilla consisted of one primary papilla and a few smaller secondary papillae. Lenticular papillae were distributed on the torus linguae. The larger papillae were arranged in two parallel lines medially whereas the smaller papillae were laterally located. Most of the fungiform papillae were found on the lateral margins of the anterior two-thirds of the tongue. These papillae were small and round. Intra-epithelial taste buds were located on the dorsal surface of each papilla. The vallate papillae were arranged in two rows on each rim of the torus linguae. Each round- and flat-shaped vallate papilla was surrounded by a prominent gustatory groove and an annular pad. A few taste buds were observed in the lateral epithelium of the papillae. The keratinization of the covering stratified squamous epithelium of the mechanical lingual papillae was relatively thicker than those of the gustatory papillae. The lingual papillae of the Bactrian camel exhibited some different characteristics from other domestic ruminants. These morphological characteristics of the tongue of the Bactrian camel might have evolved to assist the camel in prehension and manipulating of the inorganic stiff plants that grow in its environment and therefore might relate to the feed and feeding habits of the animal.
We present a 14-bit 20-MS/s pipelined analog-todigital converter (ADC) using a new digital distortion calibration technique. The calibration parameters are obtained using the same system as the conventional digital gain calibration. The ADC has been fabricated in a 0.18-µm CMOS process and consumes 33.7 mW at 2.8 V. With the calibration it achieves 15-dB improvement of the third-order nonlinearity. The measured SNDR and SFDR are 71.6 dB and 82.3 dB respectively.
Bullous systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic, widespread, non-scarring, subepidermal blistering eruption associated with autoimmunity to type VII collagen. We describe a patient with Sj ogren's syndrome/lupus erythematosus overlap syndrome who showed transient blistering eruptions over limited skin surface and in oral mucosa. At the time of aggravation, the patient's serum contained IgG autoantibodies that bound to the dermal side of 1 mol/L NaCl-split normal skin, as determined by an indirect immunofluorescence test, and that reacted to type VII collagen, as determined by immunoblotting on dermal extract. Our observations suggest that a chronic, widespread, blistering eruption is not a prerequisite for the diagnosis of bullous SLE, and a mild, transient, blistering eruption could be a manifestation of type I bullous SLE.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
