Introduction. This article has been devoted to the research of the issue of realization of psycholinguistic resources of acme potential of the Ukrainian writers and scientists whose activities are connected with generation of texts, in another cultural environment. So as to study the peculiarities of this process, which is the aim of the article, the main focus has been put on the empirical research of the correlation between the socio-cultural adaptation of Ukrainian emigrants and the indicators of acmeological and psycholinguistic resources and on revealing differences in the indicators of resources and adaptation of Ukrainian emigrants who deal with writing and scientific activities in comparison with emigrants who do not. Materials & Methods. The life sense orientation, psychological position, and the sociocultural adaptation have been identified as the main indicators of acme realization of emigrants. Accordingly, the diagnostic instruments of the study included the Life Sense Orientation Test by D. Leontev, which is an adapted version of Purpose-In-Life Test by J. Crumbaugh & L. Maholick, the “Fullness of Life” methodology by J. Powell and the Questionnaire of a Personality Adaptation to New Socio-Cultural Environment by L. Yankovskiy. Results. It has been confirmed that the desire to self-realization of the emigrants depends on interest and emotional fullness of life, self-imagination and acceptance of others. The statistically confirmed results of the research have confirmed the differences between the indicators of resources and adaptation of the Ukrainian emigrants conducting writing and scientific activities, compared to the emigrants not conducting such activities. It has been stressed out that the Ukrainian emigrants generating texts have more harmonious type of adaptation, and more often perceive the process of life as full of sense compared to those emigrants whose activities do not include narrativization. The received results testify the importance of development of acme technologies for the Ukrainian emigrants through a prism of psycholinguistics methodology.
In this article, the authors examine the problem of experiencing difficult life situations by persons with subclinical symptoms of depression through the prism of their mental representation of the problem of reaching happiness. The study empirically grounds on following: qualitative research (multiple case study) of subclinical depression; quantitative research of adaptation of Ukrainian migrants with high rates of depressiveness. On the basis of a multiple case study it is deduced that depressive concepts of happiness tend to be: 1) rigidly concentrated on the only one aspect of life; 2) over-demanding (especially toward others) to that extent that happiness seems unreachable; 3) over-evaluated, that can increase frustration and anxiety; 4) accompanied by expectation that happiness should occur itself. Impatience and whimpering are defined as peculiar feature of how a person with subclinical symptoms of depression passes through actual obstacles in reaching happiness. Considering these features, the depressive concepts of happiness appears to be quite infantile, therefore researches analyze the problems of persons with subclinical depression through the prism of the concepts of psychological infantilism. Specific presuppositions that underlie infantile expectations which had been explored during the study are revealed in the article. The quantitative study of migrants’ adaptation supports the theses of the childish nature of the depressive concept of happiness. Childhood scenario decisions and internalized parents’ drivers that are significantly related to depressiveness are given. The study highlights the role of biases and childhood decisions in irrational thinking of persons with subclinical symptoms of depression. These findings can contribute to understanding the problem of their social development.
The article proposes the results of a study of psychometric properties of The Student Workaholism Questionnaire developed in Ukrainian and studied on student sample (N = 191). A review of current studies regarding the structure and measurement of workaholism is proposed. The internal consistency, concurrent validity, discriminatory power, internal structure are studied, the constructive validity of the questionnaire is substantiated. The results indicate good internal consistency of the questionnaire (Cronbah's α = 0.88), significant-high correlation of the questionnaire with the Dutch Work Addiction Scale (Pearson's r = 0.55, 0.59 for different scales, P < 0.01), excellent discriminatory power of scores (Ferguson's δ = 0.99). Based on the exploratory factor analysis, the six-factor structure of students' workaholism is proposed. It includes (1) the pressure of the need to perform tasks (2) obsession with work; (3) health neglect; (4) selfexploitation; (5) intrinsic learning motivation; (6) perfectionism. This structure appears to be novel, thus, requires future confirmatory studies across different samples. Limitations and prospects of the research are discussed.
The article presents the study on psychometric properties of the Ukrainian version of Beck Depression Inventory-I examined with the sample of Ukrainian students (N = 234). The importance of such study for Ukrainian psychologists is discussed. Because of the peculiarities of Ukrainian grammar and the results of preliminary pilot research, we developed separate versions of the Ukrainian BDI-I for women (Form A) and men (Form B), which was a novelty of our study. According to the pilot research results, four questionnaire items turned out to be sensitive to gender differences in addressing emotional issues: Sadness, Pessimism, Crying, and Loss of Interest in Sex. Experts were engaged to evaluate the final version (both forms) of translated inventory. Item-total correlations ranged from 0,40 to 0,69 for female Form A and from 0,32 to 0,82 for male Form B. Reliability (internal consistency), concurrent validity, discriminatory power were examined; the fit of the two factor model of depression to the sample data was evaluated using confirmatory factor analysis; construct validity was substantiated. The obtained results were discussed in the context of similar world-wide studies. The study mirrored findings of previous investigations on psychometric properties of the BDI and stated that the translated inventory had an excellent internal consistency (Cronbach’s α = 0,91), significant correlations with related variables (0,74 for DASS-21-Depression Scale, 0,67 for DASS-21-Anxiety Scale, 0,64 for DASS-21-Stress Scale), proper discriminatory power (Ferguson’s δ = 0,98) for the Ukrainian student sample. Mean scores for Ukrainian students were compared with those in other studies with non-clinical samples. The limitations and prospects of the study are discussed.
