There is good reason to combine education with microcredit for poverty alleviation in the poor communities of the developing world, including in Indonesia. Poverty is dangerous, it deprives people of their right to education, their right to good health, their right to freedom of speech, their right to democracy, their right to financial services and of course their right to knowledge enhancement, which are all crucial to living a better life. We must therefore, provide services beyond, credits for the poor. In this case, education should be included to each and every development agenda for the poor since it is key to any positive change and sustainable development of people. If well planned and well integrated within the microcredit services, education can serve a good purpose in poverty alleviation. This paper describes how education and microfinance have been used in combination to alleviate poverty in Indonesia, especially in the areas studied. The study uses a multi-cases approach to examine the purposively selected baitul maal tamwil (BMTs) organisations, which are sharia based semiformal microfinance institutions regarded to be among those few integrating education with their financial services.

Environmental development is one of the pillars of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which aims to manage natural resources and the environment in a sustainable manner. Currently, both household and industrial waste are one of the causes of environmental damage due to environmental pollution. This study aims to describe the environmental literacy activities organized by Kampoeng Recycle, Jember to foster environmental awareness behaviour. This study used a qualitative approach with descriptive methods, in order to obtain a description of environmental literacy activities in household waste management. The informants of this study were the managers of the Kampoeng Recycle and the Kampoeng Recycle Community. The data analysis technique used the Miles and Huberman model, namely through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that literacy activities related to household waste management by Kampoeng Recycle involved all levels of society, both children, adolescents and adults. Environmental literacy activities include waste class activities, recycling camps, recycling gardens and waste recycling skills.
Literacy facilitators across the archipelago are currently faced with the challenge to integrate local values in functional literacy education programs, because its integration is a new aspect. This makes localized literacy content a hard thing to implement. Yet, if properly conducted, it can lead to improved learner's basic competencies. In an effort to improve the learner's competencies based on localized content, it is necessary to develop the facilitator's competencies in regard to use of localized materials, as a measure to improve the quality of the learners. In this paper, the researcher aims to bring forward a model of functional literacy education based on local culture (values) for quality performance of the community learning centers within a learning society. The research reveals that literacy education based on local culture or local content can improve the quality of learning. The conclusion is that a model combining localized content, can enrich learning in this globalized world. Such a model can help learners to act locally, but with a globalized mind.
