Cardiovascular disease (CVD), as the leading cause of death worldwide, is the collective term named for disorders afflicting the blood vessels and heart. Inflammation and enhanced oxidative stress have been shown as fundamental risk factors in the onset and progression of CVD. Chronic inflammatory conditions attenuate blood levels of antioxidants because of the continuous generation of elevated levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS). A sufficient intake of antioxidants is also suggested to beneficially interfere with CVD by quenching ROS. Antioxidant vitamins and minerals, such as vitamins A, E, and C, and zinc may slow the development and progression of CVD. This study aimed at investigating the association between daily consumption of dietary vitamins A, E, and C, and zinc and the incidence of CVD. Eligible adults (n = 5102) aged ≥ 30 years, were selected from the participants of the Tehran lipid and glucose study with an average follow-up of 5.3 years. Dietary intake was assessed using a valid and reliable semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. Anthropometrics and biochemical variables were evaluated at baseline and follow-up examinations. Multivariable Cox proportional hazard regression models were used to estimate the development of CVD associated with total intakes of vitamins A, E, and C, and zinc. This study was conducted on 2253 men and 2849 women aged 47.0 ± 11.6 and 45.6 ± 10.5 years, respectively. The main sources of dietary vitamins A, E, and C and zinc were fruits, vegetables, and legumes. Risk of CVD decreased from quartile 1 to quartile 4 for vitamin E intake (HR 1.00, 0.91, 0.77, and 0.57; Ptrend = 0.03). The association between the risk of CVD and quartiles of vitamins A, and C and zinc intake was not statistically significant. Our study suggests an inverse association between vitamin E intake and the risk of CVD, emphasizing the potential protective role of fruit and vegetable in the prevention of CVD.
IntroductionThe aim of this study was to assess the prospective association between diet quality and risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D).Research design and methodsEligible adults (n=7268) were selected from among participants of the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study with an average follow-up of 6.6 years. Dietary intakes were assessed using a valid and reliable semiquantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire. Anthropometrics and biochemical variables were evaluated at baseline and follow-up examinations. Dietary pattern scores were calculated for the Healthy Eating Index 2015, Mediterranean diet and the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension diet. Multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to estimate the development of T2D in relation to diet quality.ResultsThis study was conducted on 3265 men and 4003 women aged 42.4±14.6 and 40.6±13.5 years, respectively. After adjustment for potential confounders, all three diet quality scores were not associated with risk of T2D. Among individual components of the examined dietary patterns, risk of T2D increased from quartiles 1 to 4 for sodium intake (HR (95% CI) 1.00, 0.97 (0.75 to 1.25), 1.17 (0.92 to 1.49), 1.28 (1.01 to 1.62), Ptrend<0.01) and decreased from quartiles 1 to 4 for red meat intake (HR (95% CI) 1.00, 0.91 (0.72 to 1.14), 0.75 (0.58 to 0.95), 0.85 (0.67 to 1.08), Ptrend<0.01).ConclusionThis study emphasizes a potentially protective relationship of moderate red meat intake against development of T2D; also higher intake of sodium is related to risk of T2D.
Purpose: The current study aimed to investigate the relationship between daily consumption of total polyphenol and its subclasses and the incidence of diabetes. Materials and Methods: Eligible adults (n=6,547) were chosen from among participants of the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study (TLGS) with an average follow-up of 3.0±1.6 years. Dietary intakes were evaluated using a valid and reliable semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. Biochemical variables and anthropometrics were evaluated at baseline and follow-up examinations. Multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression models were used to estimate the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in relation to total intake of polyphenol and its subclasses (flavonoids, phenolic acids, stilbenes, and lignans). Results: This study was conducted on 2,882 men and 3,665 women, aged 41.3±14.6 and 39.0±13.4 years, respectively. The number of participants with the new-onset T2DM was 253. Mean intake of total polyphenol was 346±245 mg/1000 kcal. Risk of type 2 diabetes decreased from quartiles 1 to 4 for total polyphenols (HR: 1.00, 0.37, 0.61, 0.50, P trend <0.01), phenolic acids (HR: 1.00, 0.57, 0.49, 0.45, P trend <0.01), and lignans (HR: 1.00, 0.67, 0.61, 0.60, P trend <0.01), whereas non-significant results were found for flavonoids and stilbenes. This study suggests an inverse association between total intake of polyphenols, phenolic acids, and lignin, and the risk of T2DM. Conclusion: These results emphasize the potential protective role of polyphenol rich food groups (especially fruits and vegetables) in the prevention of T2DM.
