85‐1: Invited Paper: Organic LCDs Using Polarisers as Substrates: Enabling Pixel‐level Dimming in Dual‐Cell LCDs

Abstract: A well‐known method of increasing the contrast of an LCD is to use a dual cell. FlexEnable's low temperature organic TFT process allows us to work directly with polarisers as substrates. This reduces the gap between the cells to previously unreachable levels, allowing pixel level dimming and OLED‐like contrast from a simpler stack.

“…In another recent development, an ultrathin state-of-the-art polarizer from Nitto was used as the display substrate, and a full active-matrix OLCD was shown to be operational. 3 The ultrathin polarizer used as a substrate was just 25-µm thick, meaning such a stack employed in a dual-cell OLCD would bring the inter-cell separation down to even less than one-tenth of the pixel pitch, improving optical performance, simplifying the stack, and allowing for the first true pixel-level dimming HDR from an LCD (Fig. 5).…”

“…In the above example, whilst the inter-cell separation is already smaller than a pixel pitch in a 4K 55" TV, there are clear opportunities to further reduce the inter-cell separation using OLCD's low temperature process. In particular, an obvious avenue for OLCD is to use the Polarizer itself as the substrate, thereby removing the TAC film entirely from the stack [4].…”

“…In order to fabricate OTFTs directly onto polarizers, initial Trials were undertaken to ensure the solvent compatibility of suitably passivated polarizers, along with thermal compatibility checks in order to ensure that polarizers, mounted onto a carrier glass could withstand the sub 100°C OTFT and OLCD process. Following these checks, OTFTs were successfully fabricated directly onto passivated polarizers and mobility in excess of 1 cm 2 /Vs was obtained [4].…”
