A Cross-Cultural Study of Apology Speech Act Realizations

Abstract: Different cultural backgrounds may perform different semantic formulas. This study aimed to investigate the occurrences of apology speech acts in two dimensions of semantic formulas: frequency and pattern. The participants for this study were 32 English native speakers and 32 Thai EFL learners, in a total of 64. Participants responded to 10 apologizing in a written discourse completion task (DCT) that simulated apology-provoking situations. The responses from the DCTs were coded according to the apology taxono… Show more

“…Moreover, Table 3 shows that denial of responsibility was the fourth most used apology strategy in this study, which was quite different from many previous studies which drew on either elicited data (Olshtain and Cohen, 1990;Bella, 2014;Prachanant, 2016) or authentic data (Holmes, 1990;Shariati and Chamani, 2010), in that this strategy was not found in any of these studies. In a DCT or role-play situation, participants are usually asked to perform an apology, which means that little room is given to refuse responsibility.…”

“…The use of politeness to mitigate Face-Threatening Act (FTA) in various speech acts and contexts has attracted many scholars for almost four decades since the introduction of politeness theory by Brown & Levinson (Eelen 2014, Leech 2014, Prachanant 2016, Sifianou 2015. Although it has been criticised by some scholars, (c.f.…”

“…The data analysis was initially done by using the strategies formulated by Cohen et al (1986in Jones, 2012. However, the coding process and data analysis were enhanced using the categorization of apology strategies used by Prachanant (2016) in his study on how to respond to complaints in the hotel business. Thus, the researchers were able to code 12 semantic formulas, which are arranged according to frequency count as they occur in the agents' responses.…”
