This research explores the appraisal system in the news texts exposing issue of Duo Bali Nine execution taken from The Sydney Morning Herald, The Guardian Australia, The Jakarta Globe and The Jakarta Post websites. This is a descriptive qualitative research using criterion-based sampling technique. The primary data are taken from the interview and from the sixteen analyzed texts.the secondary data are taken from all information about journalists and the news paper also all information about Duo Bali Nine execution. The objectives of the research are to find out the appraisal systems applied in those texts, to know the journalists’ position through their texts and the influences of appraisal systems toward the readers. The results show that each news paper has their own appraisal systems patern. All types of attitudes are applied in the news texts both positive and negative. The engagement is mostly heterogloss and the mostly graduation is force- raise. Heterogloss engagement to make as if jurnalist in the neutral position and force raise graduation to make the effective news and reader not easily forget about the news.
Euphemism and dysphemism are frequently used by news writer to give stresses on some information. These kind of writing styles are often used by BBC news writer, as well. The aims of this research are to find out how euphemism and dysphemism expressions are translated from English into Indonesian.This research is descriptive qualitative in nature with single embedded case. The data of the research are all euphemism and dysphemism expressions found in 20 BBC news texts and their translation. The data collecting method applied in this research are document analysis, questioner, and focus group discussion. While, the data analysis technique used is Spradley's ethnographic method.Euphemism and dysphemism expressions found in BBC news texts are mostly translated by maintaining those expressions in the target text. English dysphemism expressions which are translated into Indonesian dysphemism ones are 50% points and euphemism expressions translated into Indonesian euphemism are 25% points. Established equivalent technique is the most used translation technique in translating euphemism and dysphemism expressions. The translator's choice of using the technique affects the expressions' translation quality in positive way. Euphemism and dysphemism expressions are best translated into target text euphemism and dysphemism expressions in order to have a high quality translation.
The COVID-19 outbreak has brought about the offline-to-online transformation of EFL undergraduate thesis supervision along with its challenging complexities. Anchored in a combination of realistic and constructivist epistemologies, this explanatory sequential design of mixed-method research aimed to investigate students’ problems of academic writing competencies, challenges in online thesis supervision, and solutions to the problems and challenges according to thesis supervisors’ perspectives. Data was first gathered using a closed-ended questionnaire involving fifty thesis supervisors from Central Java and Papua universities as the respondents. Descriptive statistical analyses were conducted to process this data. Twenty-three of the respondents were then purposively selected for interviews and focus group discussions, the data of which was analyzed using interactive model-driven analyses. This study revealed students’ problems of academic writing competencies covering the dimensions of thesis elements and writing performances. Subsequently, multiple challenges were unraveled pertaining to the issues of technological competencies, time management, complexities of students’ field research, and students’ unstable motivation. The supervisors proposed contextual solutions and those demonstrating their interventions for improving students’ metacognition, self-efficacy, and growth mindsets in academic writing. Further studies are expected to work on more in-depth mixed-method investigations that examine the interactions of motivational and strategic constructs predicting academic writing competencies to dive more deeply into the problems, challenges, and solutions concerning the online thesis supervision
This study reports on politeness in directive speech acts appearing within the proceedings of the local parliament for Sukoharjo, Indonesia. The aim is to explain the politeness strategies used to convey intended persuasive forces during parliamentary discourses. Drawing upon the pragmatic qualitative approach, this study examined 18 parliamentarians and data on their previous utterances' form, function, meaning, and context in the proceedings. Using data collected through observation, records, and documentation, it looks at how the politicians acted. The results show that directive acts represent the main performance, with 154 tokens of illocution and 44 directive speech acts for politeness. Politeness strategies to perform directive speech acts are colored with on record, positive politeness, and aversion-to-acting negative politeness. The characters for positive politeness include inviting- gentle-direct, repressing-gentle-direct, suggesting-gentle-indirect, repressing-gentle-indirect, gentle-indirect, and respecting direct. This study implies pragmatic analysis in a different setting where an emphasized degree of formality is required. Suggestions are made to compare or contrast with utterances in less formal interactions, such as in the negotiations between a buyer and seller, and in religious circumstances like sermons in a mosque, church, or colloquial proceedings.
