A randomized, controlled, single-blinded, multicenter evaluation of the efficacy and safety of a once weekly two dose otic gel containing florfenicol, terbinafine and betamethasone administered for the treatment of canine otitis externa

Abstract: BackgroundOtitis externa is a common problem in small animal practice. Compliance with daily treatment is a major cause of treatment failure. The hypothesis tested is that a novel otic gel applied to the ear canal twice with a one-week interval is as efficacious as a daily otic suspension in the treatment of canine otitis externa. The study included 286 privately owned dogs with otitis externa. In this single blinded randomized study, enrolled dogs received either an otic gel containing 1% florfenicol, 1% terbi… Show more

“…Almost 60 years later, despite the development of multiple new ear products, this statement is still valid. Intervention trials with topical therapeutics for unspecified OE have reported success rates between 65% and 81% 9,10,20–22 . The potential for chronic disease is highlighted by a report that 24% of dogs presenting for otitis had one or multiple recurrences following initial treatment with topical combination products 23 .…”

“…However, the authors regularly encounter cases of chronic (persistent or recurrent) otitis in their canine referral caseload, with Malassezia as the only identifiable pathogen, based on cytological results from aural discharge alone or in combination with negative aerobic or anaerobic bacterial culture. As the sole pathogen, Malassezia has been identified in 8% and 26% of OE cases 9,10 …”

“…Daily application of topical ear formulations in dogs at home is often difficult to perform leading to stress for both pets and owners and often poor treatment compliance [10,17,54]. A recent study has shown that reducing the frequency of otitis treatment can improve pets and owners quality of life [17].…”
