Against Content Normativity

Abstract: normativity of belief ultimately fail. CD normativism, in turn, falls prey to the 'dilemma of regress and idleness': the appeal to rules either leads to some form of regress of rules, or the notion of rule following is reduced to an idle label. We conclude by suggesting that our arguments do not support naturalism: It is a mistake to assume that normativism and naturalism are our only options. Not long ago, 'meaning is normative' was the battle cry of the day. This was largely the result of the enthusiastic re… Show more

“…For a recent defense of epistemic deontologism against this objection see Feldman (2008) and Steup (2008). 34 See Glüer & Wikforss (2009). 35 As noted above, the worry is not merely that second-order beliefs are required, but that each level of belief formation would seem to require a higher order belief.…”

“…Prima facie there is something right in this thought (although there are outright rejections in the literature, e.g. Rosenberg 2002;Steglich-Petersen 2006;Gluer and Wikforss 2009). Finding and delimiting what is right has proved to be harder than it might at first appear (Velleman 2000;Wedgwood 2002;Steglich-Petersen 2006;Engel Forthcoming).…”

“…However, all such claims have faced fierce resistance from those philosophers who insist that meaning is not normative in any nontrivial sense of the word-viz. Glüer and Pagin (1999), Wikfors (2001), Boghossian (2005), Hattiangadi (2006), Glüer and Wikfors (2009) and Hattiangadi (2009). In this paper I will sketch one particular approach to meaning claiming its normativity and defend it against the anti-normativist critique: namely the approach of Brandomian inferentialism.…”
